One thing I have found helpful in econometric modeling is always to check the assumptions and ensure none of them is violated. This enables your model to become correct in predictions and forecasting. There are instances where students may get regression results from a software and they become happy that they have high coefficient of determination, and not realizing that it may be due to the violation of "no collinearity between independent variables." Using such a model for prediction may lead to the wrong conclusions since your variance may be inflated as a result of multicollinearity. Verifying and satisfying model assumptions is key to ensuring the accuracy of the econometric model in question.

Econometrics is one of most difficult courses. Students have to dive into theories and apply it in practical tests, going through the research process ,learn from errors deploy reevaluate etc. Also they shoul dbase their assumptions strictly on data results.

Personally, the most obvious error I have found with students who study econometrics is their belief that the subject is esoteric, not practical and not understandable. An example I've seen is the tendency for students to always interpret coefficients as marginal effects without necessarily looking at the functional forms, or the very nature of the model. Take the logit model for example, students just go ahead to interpret the coefficient as marginal effects without understanding the very principle behind the use of a logit model, that is, the coefficients are given in their log odds form and express their likelihood of occurrence rather than the marginal effects of the predictors on the outcome. It is therefore vital that students understand these principles behind different econometric models, and ensure accurate interpretation of coefficients by transforming these coefficients if necessary.

Often, the independent variables might not be scaled properly. Therefore, a good understanding of the scales for all variables is a very important component.

When building a model we have to adjust the variables each time based on the output we are looking into. Knowing how to interpret R ,R square ,etc means we have a deep understanding of modeling and data interpretation however we have always to account for errors, missing data, accuracy, length of data and timline of interpretation to make accurate assumptions.

This is true for all cases. The fact that a model has high R-squared and/or low p-values does not guarantee a good model-fit. What about the (other) assumptions underlying regression model - model specification, heteroscedasticity, multicollinearity, normality of residuals? It is important to note that all these assumptions must be met before one can assume that the model has a good fit.

Selecting a model should be after gathering sufficient data, processing it and having a clear understanding of the research problem. Do not try to force your data into the model. To report the results properly, it starts with the initial motivation for the model. I've seen some research papers showing 20 independent variables (that means there are 20 hypotheses to test). It is next to impossible to get any meaningful interpretation of the regression coefficients. THe most important results to report have to be the ones related to the central motivation of the model.

As students, we often perceive constructive criticism as a delay to submission rather than an opportunity to ask questions to enable us to take direction and submit a paper that is sound, well researched and written. Supervisors were once in your shoes, and more often than not have faced the same hurdles and struggles as you are currently facing. We need to think of it from the view of, submitting a well-rounded and well-articulated paper supported by strong analytical evidence rather than the word count has been achieved and I can submit on time.

An example I've seen is students perceive constructive feedback from supervisors as supposed "hindrance to their graduation" and not as an opportunity to learn from "mistakes". In all things, students must recognize that their supervisors have gone through their experiences enough to be able to provide constructive feedback on their academic works, and that by learning to acknowledge errors and implement suggestions from supervisors is one sure way of improving the work, and at the same time learning what would make them good supervisors one day. I have studied econometrics at post-grad and I taught Econometrics 1 for a number of years so I have quite an exposure to the manner that students approach econometrics at undergraduate level. As Jeffrey Wooldridge and many other econometricians have emphasized, we should remember the difference between a "model" and an "estimation method." To say "we estimated an ordinary least squares (OLS) model" is incorrect. A correct statement is "We estimated a regression model using OLS." This distinction is especially useful in certain settings or when making comparisons across different models and/or estimation methods. For instance, we might want to compare marginal effects from a linear probability model we estimated using OLS and results from, say, a logit model we estimated using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Without properly distinguishing "models" from "estimation methods", we might confuse our readers and ourselves.
