What are the most common mistakes made in product innovation?

Whatever stage of product development you're at, find ways to test and observe with your customers. Don't rely on asking questions. People are brilliant, messy, and fascinating, but you can guarantee that more often than not they will behave differently in real life, to how they say they will in research interviews. Get out there, watch what people actually do, and find the quickest way of testing your assumptions with real stimulus - whether that's a paper prototype or a bootstrapped MVP!

Understanding the voice of customer and customer needs is heavily dependent on the level of intimacy built and trust earned. When customers know through experience you are the best partner they will share news and needs on regular basis

Getting customer feedback is essential, but it's necessary to consider regional differences, the size and profile of the customer, as well as other factors that may be important.

Early in my career, I developed a product that I thought was revolutionary. But I missed one crucial step - understanding my customer. I learned the hard way that innovation without customer insight is like shooting in the dark.

It's always best to fill out a business model canvas or at minimum, write down your potential customer segments and your value propositions for each of the segments. From there you'll want to formulate hypotheses (your assumptions) as to why those value propositions are key to that segment. By doing these two key activities, you are ahead of 50% of your competition. In my experience, most people do not complete these two basic activities and as a result, they spend a lot of time building something that no one really has a real interest in.

No clear value proposition often results in products struggling to differentiate themselves and communicate their unique benefits to customers. A strong value proposition clearly articulates the value that the product delivers to the customer, addressing why it's superior to alternatives in the market. Without a compelling value proposition, innovators face challenges in attracting and retaining customers, as well as securing investor interest and support.

Consider a health app that enters a saturated market without offering anything unique in comparison to other apps. The lack of a distinctive selling point makes it extremely difficult for the product to stand out in a crowded market. To combat this, clearly define and communicate what distinguishes your product and why it is important to your target audience.

Reality Check: A product I was involved with had great potential but didn't align with market demands. This experience underscored the significance of validating market fit before full-scale development.

Poor market fit occurs when products are developed without considering the specific needs, preferences, and behaviors of the target market. Failing to align product features, pricing, and distribution channels with market demands can result in products that fail to gain traction or generate sufficient demand. It's crucial for innovators to conduct thorough market analysis and validation to ensure that their products resonate with the intended audience and address genuine market needs.

Constant market research has to be done before developing a product. If you're going to become a full-time employer, then market analysis is the first major step to take care of. If you have experience in the same field in which you are going to build a product, then things might be easier, so without market research and analysis, it's a wrong step out of losing a lot of time and money.

Market analysis is one of the key points when it comes to innovating a product. One should know their target audience, objective, and expected outcome of the product. Further, MVP's or beta versions should be launched and tested so that you get an idea of whether the product is really solving the problem that you plan to solve and what can be improved. For example, SchoolGennie, a start-up that wanted to help Indian schools and India's educational system, failed and shut down because they didn't test their product with an MVP and waited to perfect it, which increased the production cost and time.

Misalignment with current market needs or trends is a common cause of product failure. Introducing a luxury product during an economic downturn is a prime example of poor market fit. These products are in low demand because they do not reflect the economic realities of the target audience. Addressing this requires in-depth market analysis and trend forecasting to ensure that the product meets the market's current and future needs.

A Hard Truth: Underestimating the resources needed for product development led to one of my project's downfall. Adequate funding, time, and talent are essential for success.

Planning product versioning can help to better measure the need for resources in each phase of delivery to the market and guarantee sufficient resources to evolve. In addition, with the use of the first customers you will have feedback to adjust the roadmap and resources for evolution.

When building a product, you should understand that the game is all about playing with people's deliverables. Finding people is easy if you identify the right fit for your requirements. Things can be scaled with the available network. Here, the experience of the one who develops the product can provide a clear understanding of identifying the right market.

In my experience talking to product innovators, some of the biggest challenges are helping people look outside their silos for inspiration. So often they stick to what they know which leads to innovating within a very limited box which opens yourself up for disruption.

It is important to have passion for the problem and not for the product, as over time solving a problem may require other approaches that the current product will no longer be able to meet.

The obvious doesn't seem so obvious when you are deep in launch planning: I've seen promising projects flounder due to misalignment among teams. Ensuring everyone is on the same page is critical for seamless development and execution.

Lack of alignment among key stakeholders, teams, or departments can hinder product innovation efforts by creating inefficiencies, conflicts, and misalignments in objectives and priorities. Without cohesive alignment across the organization, innovators may struggle to secure buy-in, resources, and support for their initiatives, leading to fragmented efforts and suboptimal outcomes. Establishing clear goals, communication channels, and cross-functional collaboration mechanisms is essential to fostering alignment and driving innovation initiatives forward effectively.

My favorite way to align team members is by bringing them into customer discovery interviews. One person will interview and one person will scribe. If my team member is a sales-oriented individual, I ask for them to be the scribe for the first few interviews to educate them on bias. In addition, some individuals are uncomfortable interviewing or leading conversations as they are use to their managers or more extroverted individuals leading conversations. The thing is, everyone can be a great interviewer with some training. We all look at the world through a different lens and its important to get different perspectives. Each of you will align to your customer's ideas in different ways and that leads to a stronger result in the end.

Finally, a lack of strategic alignment between the product and the overall business goals can jeopardise even the most promising innovations. Creating a product that deviates too much from the company's core competencies or brand identity can result in strategic confusion and a diluted brand message. Cohesive and effective innovation requires that product development align with and support the overall business strategy and objectives.

One common mistake I see in product innovation is getting caught up in technical issues. Leaving no room for product discovery or improving UX. Starting with a scalable technical foundation will enable you to focus on the true drivers of product success: finding product-market fit and delighting your users and business stakeholders.

I'll probably say the following are major pitfalls to avoid as well; > Over-Reliance on Technology: While technology can be a powerful tool, it's not a magic bullet. Don't let shiny gadgets overshadow the importance of human-centred design and understanding customers' needs. > Neglecting Long-Term Vision - Chasing the latest trends can lead to short-lived fads. Align your innovation efforts with your broader strategic vision and consider the long-term impact of your products or services. > Poor Market Research and Validation - Launching a product into the void without understanding market needs and preferences is a recipe for disaster. Conduct thorough market research, gather customer feedback, and iterate based on real-world insights.

One of the most common mistakes is ignoring Scalability, by only focusing on delivering ASAP without considering how the product will scale in the future. This can lead to challenges in meeting demand and expanding the product line.

Continuous Learning: Change is the one constant in product innovation. While every product development journey is unique, and there's always more to learn. Staying open to new ideas and adaptable to change has been my mantra.

I would attribute the entire flaw to the initial planning and requirements at times. As a product gets envisioned initially till the product is matured, it evolves in itself, thus deviating a lot from its original mission statement. This becomes very difficult to handle and overcome, unless carefully evaluated and given a buffer of approx 5-10% of diversion while considering the risks involved as well.
