A common mistake is jumping to a conclusion quickly and deciding that you “like” or “dislike” the artwork. I find it useful to resist this dualistic urge and spend as much time as possible with an open and curious mind so that the work can fully reveal itself.
Using words that are not specific to their use in the language of Art... Pretty, nice, abstract is not the same as non-objective, boring, normal, realistic is not the same as naturalistic, etc. Educate yourself or listen to those that have...

Diferencia en gustos, a veces excesivo hiperrealismo (creen que es una foto), empatía, simpatía, animadversión (a veces), egoísmo,... Pero fundamental diferencias en gustos y criterios. Creo que debemos valorar el esfuerzo, talento y desarrollo de la obra

After Teaching Art Class for many years, I have learned that being truthful in Your Critique is important...The Student is looking at You for Honesty and Guidance. Connect with the Student and thus connect to the Work in Question. Be kind and assuring as I believe Art shouldn't be Critiqued in general as it is merely an expression or an impression of what the Artist has put into reality..it is part of Them, a piece of Their soul, its not a competition. Always back up Your critique with solutions and constructive advice to nudge the Student to try new directions.

I don't believe Art can be valued per say. All Art is ... what it is..Art. There are techniques that produce Work with impact, but in the end its not Your Work....so long as the Artist is satisfied.

You can also be honest and sincere, but not arrogant or pretentious. You can also be confident and assertive, but not aggressive or dogmatic.
I want to say this is correct when dealing with art that is not harmful to other people. The art world is rife with art depicting hurt women and children aesthetically. I haven’t been able to find a way to engage in critiquing art that glorifies physical and sexual violence against women and children. I know if I engage in critiquing this art I know the person and those supporting him live in cognitive dissonance or likes to twist words when the critique is well built or thoughtful. In this instance it should just plainly be said that this art is pedophilic in nature or has no other defining characteristics other than glorifying abuse against women in children.
There is some Artists who produce Shock Art...whether to be disruptive or because a particular voice is being used at any given moment...it comes down to Apples and Oranges, if You cant relate to the Work....that's ok.
