Returning the data that is required is only a part of the full task and any project that doesn't bring DBAs into the test and development phases as soon as possible will more often than not suffer once the project has been deployed into production.

This is one of the most frustrating because it means the project most likely wasn't coreectly defined at the outset. Allowing scope creep for a certain period is ok (still not good) but after a while there needs to be a scope change freeze otherwise deadlines and functionality are at risk.

It is difficult to say that a lack of testing is the problem but rather a lack of the right sort of testing under the right circumstances. A typical example is the Software Development Life Cycle whereby developers wait until production to bring DBAs into the process. Bringing DBAs as soon as possible into the process, problems can be anticipated and identified and resolved database-side before it even touches production, most of the time. Data Engineers often make the same mistake. Pipelines are built and tested under almost perfect development conditions without understanding entirely how the production environments will react under the additional load. Will my new process affect others or will other processes affect mine?

If possible, get in early to provide ‘your’ (realistic) estimates, otherwise others will guesstimate for you without knowing what’s involved and you will end up with impossible timeframes. When estimating timeframes, consider: Resources- yourself and others Turnover - known and unknown Other projects/commitments Support and their capacity Dependencies Documentation Time spent in project Meetings Finally add 20% on to allow yourself time to breathe

To match the deadlines the most common and easy approach database engineers adopt is to play with the standards. It initially fasten the work and may match the deadlines but in future it puts the entire project at risk. Adhering to the standards and best industry practices should always be the first priority if you wish to avoid hassle at the later stages.
