One of the most common mistakes is that proofreading isn't "that" important. Readers will excuse a typo here and there. And to an extent, some will. Yet, often unconsciously, it degrades their trust in the content overall. If there are spelling errors, how do they know what you say is accurate? Another misconception is proofreading is strictly looking for spelling and typos. In my experience, the best proofreaders act as an editor's backup. They look for broken links, double-check company and people's names, and other things like politically insensitive phrasing (which keeping current on these is vital). They look for overused words or duplicated phrases and suggest alternatives. A good proofreader is invaluable and an author's gold.

You also want to make sure that your content aligns to your brand in style and format, and that it's telling the story you want it to tell. Finally (although I could go on), checking the accuracy of facts and figures is often part of this role, as proofreaders are frequently some of the last eyes on the content. Again, that can be subjective, and especially with AI tools, we've seen that they don't always give the most accurate answers.
