SMART goals help you and your mentee define what you want to accomplish, how you will measure your progress, what resources and support you need, how the goals align with your vision and values, and when you expect to achieve them. SMART goals also help you track and evaluate your mentee's performance and provide feedback along the way.

SMART goals have proven effective and are the best approach for new people managers. My management style is a tad different and for my direct reports, have used another method. (I think I invented this method) COFFEE Goals: Consistent, One-Time, Flexible, Financial, Essential and Extra. My strategy would've not been relevant if I was not in the security industry as not all people managers will have a hand in finances.

2 GROW model

Another popular mentoring tool is the GROW model, which is a structured way to guide your mentee through a problem-solving or decision-making process. GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will. The GROW model helps you and your mentee identify the goal you want to reach, the current situation and challenges you face, the possible alternatives and solutions you can explore, and the actions and commitments you will take to achieve the goal. The GROW model encourages your mentee to think creatively, critically, and confidently, and to take responsibility for their own learning and development.

While I have not worked for an employer that adopted a 360-degree feedback loop on the record, I have personally made an effort to engage in 360-degree feedback. Not only to my direct reports but to staff that I was assigned to support or work directly alongside. It has not failed me to-date. One can learn alot from feedback. It only gets difficult when someone's constructive criticism is framed incorrectly. In these scenarios, the wordage ends up coming across as an insult. I'm sure we've all been there once or twice.

4 SWOT analysis

A fourth common mentoring tool is the SWOT analysis, which is a strategic tool to assess your mentee's internal and external factors that affect their success. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Strengths and weaknesses are the internal factors that your mentee can control or influence, such as their skills, knowledge, experience, or personality. Opportunities and threats are the external factors that your mentee cannot control or influence, such as the market, competition, trends, or regulations. 5 Socratic questioning

Socratic questioning helps you and your mentee explore the underlying assumptions, evidence, implications, and consequences of your mentee's ideas, opinions, or actions. Socratic questioning also helps you and your mentee uncover gaps, inconsistencies, or contradictions in your mentee's logic, and to test and refine their arguments. Socratic questioning fosters your mentee's critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, and empowers them to find their own answers and solutions.

6 Action learning

A sixth common mentoring tool is the action learning, which is a process of learning by doing, reflecting, and applying. Action learning involves your mentee working on a real-life project or challenge, either individually or in a group, that is relevant and meaningful to their goals and context. Action learning helps your mentee apply their knowledge and skills to a practical situation, experiment with different approaches, learn from their successes and failures, and receive feedback from you, their peers, or other stakeholders. Action learning also helps your mentee develop their teamwork, leadership, and innovation skills, and to transfer their learning to other situations.
