What are the most common job titles in digital learning?

Leaning Experience Designer At Amazon, instructional designers are known as Learning Experience Designers. LXDs not only do all the things that IDs do, but also always keep the learners’ experience in mind when we design and develop learning.

The latest titles in the L&D field revolve around Learning Experience Designer, or LXD. You see these replacing Instructional Designer roles. One area I am curious about is with the rise of AI, how L&D titles will change or morph. We will need to focus on learning data skills and understanding how to use AI technology to onboard, train and upskill workers in AI technologies. Future AI roles in organizations are C-level Analytics Executives, Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Product Owners, Analytics Translators, Data Engineers, Data Architects, UI/UX Designers, Visualization Specialists, and Business Analysts. I'm curious to see how L&D roles evolve, for example, will we have Learning Analytics Translator roles in the future?

Learning Systems Administrator These are just a few examples, and the actual designations used can vary depending on the organization and industry.

In my experience, the most common are.... Instructional Designer: Responsible for creating engaging and effective online learning materials and courses. E-Learning Developer: Focuses on building and maintaining e-learning platforms and content. LMS Administrator: Manages Learning Management Systems, overseeing user access, data, and content management. Online Course Developer: Specialises in designing and developing online courses for specific subjects or industries. Digital Learning Specialist: Works to integrate digital tools and technologies into educational or training programs.

Learning Content Developer, Training Content Developer or Content Developer. These roles place the emphasis on development rather than analysis or design, and also includes more content types than just e-learning. (workshops, job aids, webinars, digital print items, videos, audio, etc.)

This is one of today's greatest challenges for our industry, the lack of shared industry standards and language. The problem is that with the pandemic, learning became a business imperative to everyone everywhere at once before we had the time to establish effective roles and responsibilities, standards of use, or even a common language. Recently, I pulled 100 resumes for 'LMS Administrator' and they included most if all of these roles in each of them. So, my titles for learning operation roles are simple: "Learning Operators" are the people who know 'how to do' learning operations (architects, designers, integrators...). "Learning Leaders" are the people who know what 'should' be done (officers, directors, administrators...).

I wouldn't say e-learning developers commonly use programming, therefore they wouldn't need HTML, CSS, and Javascript experience. Programming skills are good to have but not the main toolkit of an e-learning developer. I would say e-learning developers use a range of authoring tools, such as Articulate Storyline and Rise.

E learning developer. It is an interesting highly sought after job title in the e-learning space. This is more like a content developer to enable others to get informed.

The title 'eLearning Developer' is often seen, but tends to be very specific and means that the person may not possess the entire, instructional design skill set and toolkit. Instead, eLearning Developers typically are highly skilled in the tools associated with gamified eLearning development, but may not have the strong front-end analysis, writing, implementation, and evaluation skills that full IDs have, across the spectrum of learning approaches, types and tools that are requested of L&D. eLearning Developers are great to have when an organization users a rapid, iterative and agile development approach, because their skill is usually high enough to generate or update good eLearning content quickly, when supplied with a good storyboard.

The e-learning developer will indeed help implement the learning. Activities. to understand the why. The developer needs to be familiar with instructional design principles to let them think about which of their learning activities (like the Lego pieces) will contribute more to the teaching-learning and which way to create the assessment will bring a "higher degree of evidence" whether the students have achieved the learning outcomes or not. It is to develop with a clear purpose by enhancing the teaching-learning process.

There is unfortunately no industry standardisation in ensuring that these roles involve only what the titles suggest. Depending on the organisation's need you might find a learning technologist developing contents as well.

Where I work as an instructional designer in higher education, learning technologists (LTs) have two primary roles. One is to be a resources to instructional designers with technical and/or repetitive tasks. For example, I might hand off text files to an ID and ask them create quizzes from them in the LMS. While both of us can do this work, the LTs are much more efficient at it. That efficiency comes in large part from their other role, which is, essentially, stage two help desk for LMS-related issues, for both students and instructors. Where I work, LTs are not expected to have any understanding of pedagogical aspects of design, as that's the role of the instructional designers.

I like this term and I have just added this to my intro! It speaks to a much wider interest in learning technologies, in the ways learning and technologies intersect. However, very few people in the industry care about these connotations. It currently works more like an errand boy kind of job. For instance at Stanford we have a title called Academic Technology Specialist. It doesn't require any experience in teaching or understanding in learning.

However, beyond technical skills, they must foster pedagogical understanding and communication to truly enhance learning. As education evolves, their adaptability and innovative approaches become increasingly vital. Thus, learning technologists serve as architects of modern education, shaping the future of learning through the integration of technology and pedagogy.

Learning Technologist or in our case Educational Technology Specialist (EdTech) is the most generalistic job description and can include tasks of the other job descriptions too.

Online Instructors may be facilitators or faculty for a college, university or online K-12 academic program. Typically, this title is not used as much in the coporate sector but instead finds popularity in higher education, where highly-educated teachers at various levels can share their expertise via a web-based curriculum. Good Online Instructors are usually very knowledgeable in their field, understand online learning experience or class management, and create interactive experiences that avoid the pain points of 'chalk and talk'.

I am of the opinion that online instructors play a crucial role in modern education, bridging the gap between learners and knowledge in the digital realm. Beyond subject expertise, they must master diverse online teaching skills to effectively engage students. As technology evolves, so do the methods of online instruction, necessitating continuous adaptation and innovation. A successful online instructor must embody versatility, empathy, and a commitment to fostering meaningful learning experiences in the virtual classroom.

It is crucial Online Instructors not only understand their content and are subject matter experts but are very active and communicative in the online classroom. Communication is key in all aspects of education but it is particularly crucial when teaching online. Instructors on any level, need to be "present" and responsive to their students. That interaction makes all the difference in a course's efficacy.

I would also add that a digital learning manager needs to work closely with many stakeholders across the business to help achieve everyone's objectives. How can their team contribute to L&D needs and staff progressions? Are there skills gaps that can be meet by a digital learning programme? Do the H&S team need help sourcing the right external eLearning packages? Building up relationships with stakeholders and colleagues like this not only ensure that company and team goals are met, but also raise the profile of the team and make them a well known resource to be used and appreciated.

I think a digital learning manager plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of education by harnessing technology. They're not merely administrators but visionaries who steer institutions towards innovative learning methodologies. Their ability to blend leadership, management, and tech-savvy skills is crucial. They're tasked with not only implementing digital solutions but also ensuring they enhance learning outcomes. In essence, they're architects of a dynamic educational landscape, driving progress through digitalization.

I would include the reporting structure. Do they seat with the Leadership Team to review business needs, design the company's learning strategy. Also, why 'Digital'? Is that person working with an 'Analogue' Learning Manager (face-2-face, classroom, on-the-job, seminars...) and someone in HR for professional development (external providers of learning/courses)?

I've recently seen Instructional Designer jobs listed as Professional Development Specialists. These jobs are mostly in k-12 education or in higher ed. The job functions include designing both online and in person training, as well as assisting teachers with curriculum and lesson planning as well.

I am an Instructional Designer, but we are end-to-end. So Instructional design + elearning development + graphic design + translation + LMS upload and test.

During my nearly 30 years in education I have had different titles: Educator, Teacher, Education Technology Specialist, Information Technology Director, Educational Technology Director, Assistant Director of Online Learning, Assistant Director of Digital Education and Innovation, Assistant Principal. The unofficial title that means the most is when a colleague refers to me as a leader, stating that leading is so much more than managing people, curriculum or devices. As you serve your colleagues continually showing that you care and have their best interests in mind, you earn their love and respect; the title with which they refer to you will always mean more than a stale HR generated label.
