What are the most common engagement issues in visual design?

Visual design is a mode of communication which means what you design must be able to communicate properly to the audience you are designing for. Firstly, you must define who your target audience is before you start your design. Afterwards, you must apply design principles like hierarchy, alignment, positioning. Know the right color to use depending and the most appropriate text to pass the information properly.

It occurs when there's a misalignment between the designers' and clients' visions. Prior to initiating any project, I personally emphasize the importance of comprehending the brief and onboarding process. Starting a new project requires approximately 4-5 days to grasp the story, visuals, and strategy, ensuring the work is executed in the most effective manner to eliminate clarity issues.

The most common engagement issue in visual design is lack of clarity. Unclear hierarchy, confusing layouts, and ambiguous messaging hinder user understanding and interaction. Clear communication through design elements is essential for effective engagement, ensuring users can easily navigate and comprehend content, fostering a positive user experience.

As a brand designer, I feel emotions and story play a huge role in any visual design. If audience can relate to the visuals, the copy of the design, the colours and images then it can make a huge impact. Brands use specific images that tells a story and emotion of their brand, colours and fonts that aligns with their identity and again speaks up the emotion. In conclusion, it’s all about evoking the emotion.

As an experienced graphic designer, I realized this quite late: graphic designers possess the ability to evoke various emotions through design. The absence of emotion in visual design occurs when we fail to grasp the final result or where the design/product will lead our audience. Lack of empathy and research! A lot of graphic designers have an established workflow, and while this is not a bad thing overall, sometimes we forget to adapt our style to match the audience we're designing to. Don't be afraid to ask colleagues or even your target audience what they like and dislike. It could be colors, elements (use of 2d or 3d graphics or realistic photos), ease of use, and understanding. For example, I'm colorblind, and most graphic designs do not contemplate my audience when designing.

In addition to providing clear feedback, designers should also consider the overall usability of the interface, accessibility for all users, consistency in design elements throughout the platform, and the target audience's preferences and needs. Keeping these factors in mind ensures a well-rounded and effective visual design that maximizes user engagement and satisfaction.

Let's talk about WHITE SPACE ?? (a.k.a negative space). Overcrowding or a lack of white space can disrupt visual hierarchy and readability. Achieving a balanced and consistent application of white space is essential for creating engaging designs that guide the viewer's focus and deliver an impactful visual experience.

Consistency and relevance are crucial factors in visual design. A consistent design approach is a must, utilizing the same font, icons style, and maintaining uniform image quality throughout the design to establish a cohesive design feel. Relevance is equally important; even if you create a visually appealing design, its effectiveness diminishes if it doesn't resonate with your audience. No matter how well-designed, a lack of connection with the audience can be a common engagement issue in visual designs.
