1 Lack of awareness

One of the main challenges is that some board members may not be aware of the current and emerging CSR issues that affect your industry, customers, employees, and society. They may have outdated or incomplete views on what CSR entails and why it matters. To address this challenge, you need to provide them with relevant and credible information on the CSR landscape, such as benchmarks, best practices, standards, regulations, risks, and opportunities. You can also share case studies and examples of how other organizations have benefited from CSR or faced negative consequences for ignoring it.

Corporate social responsibility is a management concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders. CSR is generally understood as being the way through which a company achieves a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives, while at the same time addressing the expectations of shareholders and stakeholders. CSR approach is holistic and integrated with the core business strategy for addressing social and environmental impacts of businesses. CSR activities benefit businesses, local communities, customers, government agencies and employees of the companies, however, has many challenges in Implementation as lack of awareness and willingness.

Being tone deaf to the current implications of reputation and the role each company has building sustainable futures might be a challenge and a liability for a company. Today CSR should be a core part of a business strategy and not a PR stunt. The values and purpose of an organization should be aligned with actions that contribute to building a sustainable future. If the C-Level is not sensitive to the context it should be to the business future. If the company is public the reporting process will oblige them to take serious measures. A good consultant as well as change management actions could help build a credible strategy.

2 Resistance to change

Another challenge is that some board members may be resistant to change or reluctant to invest in CSR initiatives. They may perceive CSR as a cost, a distraction, or a threat to their existing business model or priorities. They may also be skeptical about the impact or return on investment of CSR activities. To overcome this challenge, you need to demonstrate how CSR aligns with your organization's vision, mission, values, and goals. You also need to show how CSR can create value for your organization and its stakeholders, such as enhancing customer loyalty, employee engagement, innovation, risk management, and social license to operate.

3 Lack of skills

A third challenge is that some board members may lack the skills or competencies to oversee and guide your organization's CSR strategy and performance. They may not have the knowledge, experience, or networks to understand and address the complex and dynamic CSR challenges and opportunities. They may also not have the tools or frameworks to monitor and evaluate your organization's CSR progress and impact. To tackle this challenge, you need to provide them with ongoing training and development opportunities on CSR topics and trends. You can also invite external experts or stakeholders to share their insights and perspectives with your board.

A final challenge is that some board members may not be engaged or committed to your organization's CSR agenda. They may not see CSR as a strategic priority or a board responsibility. They may also not participate actively or constructively in your organization's CSR discussions and decisions. To address this challenge, you need to foster a culture of board leadership and accountability on CSR. You can also create opportunities for your board members to experience and witness the benefits and impacts of your organization's CSR initiatives, such as visiting your projects, meeting your beneficiaries, or receiving feedback from your stakeholders.

To help tackle the foregoing issues, It helps if heads of sustainability or "chief sustainability officers (CSOs)" - as they are called nowadays - occupy board positions. As sustainability and CSR gain prominence, a conscious, radical shift towards an international regime where chief sustainability officers are bestowed with C-suite powers is needed. That way, boards stay aware of critical sustainability matters. As a result, sustainability and CSR issues are more likely to be taken seriously at board level where the most important decisions are taken. Getting it absolutely right at governance level (being the third ESG pillar) is crucial for the other two pillars to function well. Fixing your governance = strong ESG/CSR programs.
