As someone who works with fiber outdoors on golf courses, baseball fields, football stadiums as well as indoors in rafters of concert venues and other live tv broadcast atmospheres. Environmental issues are always present. Best way to avoid “dirty fiber” is to keep the fiber capped and always carry a cleaner

In my experience, the environmental factors like dust will cause the contamination of connectors thus affect the quality of the fibre optic link

1. Human handling: Touching the ferrule (the polished end face of the connector) with bare fingers, transferring skin oils and other contaminants. 2. Environmental factors: Dust and airborne particles settling on the ferrule. 3. Poor cable management: Tightly bending cables, which can damage the ferrule and introduce contaminants. 4. Improper cleaning: Using the wrong cleaning materials or techniques, which can scratch the ferrule and worsen contamination. Not cleaning the connector frequently enough. 5. Faulty connectors: Damaged ferrules, which can trap contaminants.

Before ever connecting to fiber ends always clean both. Ferrule end caps commonly called dust caps is a misnomer. They don’t keep an end clean they are designed only to protect the ferrule end.

Transmission can be highly affected depending on the way the fibers are connected. When connected properly, light is transmitted successfully. When fibers are not connected properly or are contaminated, errors such as back reflection, insertion loss, and even equipment damage can occur.

we have taken note that mechanical connectors, even well terminated have a lower longevity due to browning. It does not seem to be in 100 percent of the cases, but at a much higher rate than spliced pigtails with cleaned lenses before installation.

Si luego de limpiar varias veces el conector, no aprueba la evaluación del certificador se tiene que desechar el patch cord o pigtail que contiene a dicho conector.

Use of a low grade alcohol will cause more damage to the end face than any other. It causes clouding of the lens on the face, and if the laser is powerful enough will burn onto the end requiring replacement. It is better to use a product designed for fibre cleaning rather than alcohol. The alcohols we see are listed as 99.99% pure have other products in them that contaminate it.

Una adecuada limpieza de los conectores antes de ser acoplados en necesaria. Pero el resultado de dicha limpieza y el estado del conector solo se puede determinar utilizando una sonda de inspección electrónica que tenga software certificador que cumpla con la norma IEC-61300-3-35. Muchas veces la limpieza en seco es suficiente, la limpieza mixta húmeda /seca se debe realizar solo cuando sea necesario y con los disolventes apropiados

I have found that different vendors are better than others so the manufacturing process plays a role. I won’t name brands but I have piles of jumpers that have failed right out of the bag and all the cleaning process’s/products were unsuccessful.

Never assume that a fiber is clean. Not brand new out of the bag, or after it's been plugged in for years. Always Scope and clean the fibers according to your companies or Manufacturers SOP. Clean bullheads and all associated fibers that can be pulled during an outage or during a maintenance window. Knowing that you have done your job in cleaning the suspect fibers will help you to better troubleshoot any fiber related issues. You just have to trust someone on the other side has done the same.
