I'm personally practicing such a hiring process when firstly the candidate has an interview with a HR manager. Then a candidate has an interview with a future colleagues and a head of the department in order to receive more information concerning duties, requirements and terms of work. And only after that, the last step is an interview with the operation director.

Onboarding can make or break a long-lasting working relationship. The interview isn't the only evaluation we make. An accepted offer isn't the end-all, be-all. Onboarding is the REAL 1st impression a company makes on a new employee. I have seen it done really well, with orientation, a schedule of meetings with key points of contacts, company history, and consistent check-ins. I have also seen and experienced very poor onboarding, where getting a seat & a laptop were the extent of the process. Looking back at my career, the "seat & laptop" method of onboarding set the tone for how my experience would be. The company's I look back on fondly took the time to integrate me into the work, the people, and the company. Onboarding is so important!

Conflicted training with staff, expectations unclear can cause a disconnect. Imagine if you’re a chef, you get put into a busy kitchen, but you’re not told we’re the fridges are, the pans, the expectation of the restaurant… Put a racehorse in an open field, where does the horse run too?

How someone goes about their work is equally as important (if not more) than what someone does and how technically capable they are. In most cases, if someone cannot build good relationships, collaborate effectively in problem solving and communicate (as some examples), it won’t matter how technically proficient they are. We often hire for technical skills and know-how and let people go for the “how”. The mistake is underestimating the importance of assessing how someone will go about their work in balance with what they know and what technical skills they possess.

A common mistake is not remembering there is a human being behind the resume. Dragging one’s feet throughout the process; lack of communication throughout the process even if it is a simple update; and treating candidates as if he/she is nothing more than a cork to fill a hole. Without true empathy for another and constant communication and consideration for the ‘human behind the resume’ companies lose out every time. When I offer someone a position I believe I have created enough of a bond between the two of us that if questions arise he/she knows I am always available to solve the riddle.

Once HR has completed their onboarding, TEAMS often have a "sink or swim" mentality. Even if a new TEAM member has all the qualifications for a position, they still need guidance on the process of their new position - where supplies are located, how to get lunch - someone to eat with and become a good resource for them - etc. Many times TEAMS do not take valuable time to onboard within their department and they do not see the success they would see, if they would only take that extra time!
