MOIC is a good way to track a folio's progress and one can have a target number in mind at the end of Fund tenure but that should inevitably correlate with an IRR number. Why ? Every LP is given, in India, a detailed PPM and a pitch deck that tells them the target IRR at the end of the typical 8 year fund tenure. They look for this target to be met and compare it with IRR achieved through public market investments. After all, they are sacrificing liquidity ( VC investments are essentially as illiquid as it gets) for achieving a high IRR and take on higher risk as well. Weigh post-exit value creation if portfolio companies eventually go public. VC returns often underestimate this. Evaluate consistency. Look at first fund performance, not just cumulative track record. And assess persistence across vintage years. Contrast concentration and stage risk. Higher exposure to early stage investing can explain higher return for example. Look at loss ratios, not just returns. Higher returns may come with more failures. Assess risk-adjusted returns.

Monitor fundraising pace. Faster subsequent fundraising can signal positive momentum. Slower pace may indicate issues. Note red flags. Resignations of key team members, high burn rates, pivots in core product, etc. can be leading indicators of problems. Regularly assess reserves. This indicates capital remaining for follow-on investment. Low reserves can restrict ability to support top companies.

Exits drive all return outcomes and therefore ought to be a team's portfolio's priority activity once investments have been made. Incentivise transactors on exit rate and exit multiple, to balance both volume and value of cash returns for the fund.

Consider qualitative factors during regular portfolio reviews. How effectively are management teams executing? Is the market evolving as expected? Don't overly optimize for exits. Prioritizing only near term exits over long-term value creation may not maximize returns.

Venture is a power law asset category. Beyond just traditional metrics, you want to assess things like loss ratio, not just by number of companies, but by $ invested. Think of that as batting average. Do I make money more often than I lose it? That's helpful, but not the whole story. Given the power law nature, you want to measure slugging percentage. How have your biggest bets/swings done? Hopefully that number is greater than batting average, and meaningfully so. Lastly, by what increment do your big wins offset your biggest losses? Again, hopefully that is even larger than your slugging percentage. While all performance is a lagging indicator, this at least provides some directional information in such a power law driven asset class.

Monitoring impact metrics allows you to measure the tangible benefits generated by your investments beyond financial returns.
