If you have something in your design and you can't explain why: you can't connect it to the requirements, you can't make compromises - you're probably doing something wrong. If you can explain in detail what you do and how you do it, but you can't explain why - you are a waste of money and can spend budget for no reason, work on unnecessary things and ignore important architectural requirements and quality attributes most critical to your system.

You can find different methods and approaches on the Internet, but they all have one thing in common - you use an iterative approach. Believe me, you cannot design something (choose technologies, draw rectangles and lines) and then try to find an application according to your requirements! It will never work. You should review the requirements and decision logs and add a new drawing stroke to your design for each one.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" Diagrams are typically the way I find best to communicate solution architecture to various stakeholders but the more senior the stakeholders, the more important storytelling becomes. If you have solved a similar problem before you may have a decent chance at a successful up front solution. However, if you are facing a problem unlike one you have personally solved before, you'll likely not know enough to reach an optimum solution. Instead, you can "build to learn" by forming solutions to small subsets of the problem space. For example, your build to learn activity might involve a small CLI python script that works on hard coded data. A later experiment may move the script to use dynamic data. In this approach you will have a way to quantify risk and build up the context required to map out a general solution.
