What methods can you use to refine your pacing and timing during a speech?

I often record and listen to it over and over before I even begin to edit. I try to cut out any unnecessary parts early so that I can focus on filling in with the most appropriate material. Practice is key.

I can elaborate on this point using an example from my school days. Whenever I used to participate in any declamation contest, the time limit there was usually 3-4 minutes. In first round of practice, I still remember, I finished my subject matter in 4 min 32 seconds. I informed my mentor, but she asked me to practice again and again and bingo! after some time, I finished the same matter in 3 min 54 sec. What was this? This was the magic of "Practice". When you practice, you get familiar with the subject matter and you start feeling that matter and then you speak it with a flow and some emotions. Only practice can bring this.

Once a king wanted to convey a message to his soldier. What he said - "Stop don't...let him go. And the soldier let that person go. Although he did what the king told him, but still he was fired . Why?Because actually the king wanted to say- "Stop...don't let him go." ;) It is just the usage of pauses that makes all the difference. So, use the pauses wisely. :)

Maintaining an eye contact shows that you are a confident speaker. Moreover, it helps the speaker to adjust his speed as well as matter as well. If the speaker judges from the expressions that audience is not able to understand his matter, he may lower his speed a bit and start emphasizing on certain words so as to make them understand. If audience is yawning ;), it means either the speed is slow or the subject is boring (there are some topics that are quite boring for the listener as he may not be from that background etc), then the speaker may adjust his matter and include some interesting incidents in it to again arise the interest of the audience.

Feedback during your speech is important. Scan the audience to see if they are following what you are saying with interest. If they are looking elsewhere or whispering to each other it may be that you are speaking too quickly. Remember it's about quality not quantity. The most successful speakers address the audience as if they are having a personal conversation. Thinking this way will allow you to look at different people in the audience at different times. This will get their attention. Endless statistics and data will lose their attention. And don't forget to smile when appropriate.

Use non-verbal feedback by comparing audience tone during your speech to their physical cues during the other speeches in the event line-up. It's also a great idea to intersperse opportunities for audience engagement. When you throw out a quick question or request for a nod, a word or a gesture from your audience, you are essentially getting instant feedback by noting the enthusiasm of the interaction.

For messages that are critically important, it often helps to pause and then repeat what was just said. “Let me say that again.” And then repeat the last statement at an intentionally slower, dramatic pace. Don’t over-use this and certainly don’t mis-use it! Only do it if you truly believe it. Honesty and authenticity are key!

To refine your pacing and timing during a speech, use these 2 method: I call it the smile & stare and pause & breathe method. especially when you want to say and emphasize something you know will be a 'shocker' or it's something you need your audience to grab, just smile and stare at them intently and in that silence or pause, breathe in and out silently to help your pace or a bit loudly to focus their attention on you even more.

For pacing, just stay calm. Understanding that movement during presentation is part of the art and act, but your movement have to be controlled and deliberate. Know when move your steps, how many steps you want to take, the distance you will like to cover and how you use your body gesture. Your movement should complement your message as you are like an artist acting out a script using words and body language.

1. Practice, practice, practice. When people are staring at you on a stage (Virtual or in-person), they can 100% tell who has shown up to wing it and who prepares. The more you do your talk, the better you'll get at staying on a good cadence and within your given time parameters. 2. Record yourself, then watch back. Where did you lose your own attention as the audience? Where did you get bored? Where did you laugh? Adjust accordingly. 3. Show the video to a trusted friend/advisor/coach and ask for their CONSTRUCTIVE feedback. Friends can be great at building us up, but you get better by finding the gaps and closing them. Ask questions like " What can I do better?" "Where did you laugh?" "Where did you tune out?" Then... Practice more.
