What makes interaction design unique among other design disciplines?

Interaction design is a highly distinguished field in the design space as it focuses on creating engaging and meaningful experiences for users through digital interfaces. It considers how users interact with technology, emphasizing usability, accessibility, and human-computer interaction. Unlike other design disciplines, interaction design involves dynamic and interactive elements, such as user feedback, responsiveness, and behavior-driven design. It also integrates aspects of psychology, information architecture, and technology to create seamless and intuitive user experiences.

The scope of interaction design involves creating meaningful and efficient interactions between users and digital products or systems. It encompasses designing user interfaces, defining user experiences, and ensuring usability. Interaction designers focus on optimizing how users interact with and navigate through websites, applications, or devices to enhance overall user satisfaction and usability. This field also considers aspects such as information architecture, user flows, and user feedback to create intuitive and engaging user experiences.

Interaction design is about meeting the the user's needs and expectations, building trust and predictability, and reducing complexity.

The scope of interaction design is indeed expansive, extending beyond digital interfaces to encompass a wide array of products and domains. Yes that’s true, but personally for me, (with a background in industrial design) the most interesting differentiation is the ability to ‘continuously improve’. The UI UX design process does not end with the launch of a product. It is an ever evolving and updated based on user feedback, new business goals, technological advancement and design patterns. It is always a work in progress.

Well, indeed... In a not-that-recent project, utilizing this process proved invaluable. Through user interviews and journey mapping, we identified pain points in a platform. Rapid prototyping allowed us to experiment with design alternatives and testing these prototypes with actual users provided insights that reshaped the final interface, resulting in a more intuitive and satisfying experience. This iterative approach exemplifies how the user-centered design process in interaction design fosters continuous improvement and alignment with user expectations. Of course, not every business can and will have the time and money to spend on the whole process... So, be chill and enjoy whatever step you can use to create a better user experience!

As we all have become digital savvy users, it always good to draw upon interaction patterns we use in our everyday lives. This helps with establishing predictability and helping users quickly complete their tasks.

Adding on what Art Perry said before, as those interaction patterns, also consistency is a linchpin, as it leverages same (well, or others) familiar patterns, ensuring users feel at ease across various contexts. Simplicity, through clear hierarchy and minimal elements, is one of the most important things to do for reducing cognitive load and enhancing usability. Lastly, accessibility underscores the importance of inclusivity, making designs adaptable to diverse user needs and situations.

In addition to the tools needed to communicate interaction design, a solid understanding of established design patterns will help better communicate your designs. Without that, your interaction experience could cause user confusion resulting in lower adoption.

If you're considering a career in Interaction Design, based on my experience, interaction designers need a generalist background or be T-shaped designers, and thrive in cross-disciplinary collaborative design. They need to possess a variety of UX, design, and technical coding knowledge and skills to navigate the demands of this job role. Additionally, a natural or trained eye for details and the motivation to work through all those minutiae are crucial to job satisfaction. Some designers love details and pixel-pushing, while others prefer high-level strategy and delivering wireframes. Learning what you like can help you determine whether interaction design aligns with your strengths, needs, and wants for yourself in your design career.

Good communication and a curious mind are very important soft skills. The Interaction Designer needs to fully understand the user, their needs, goals, and frustrations. It is like being a method actor, you need to feel their perspective. The interaction designer needs to engage in conversations with the users and be able to go down tangents with them to understand their current workarounds. Workarounds are great as they show areas where users put extra effort to achieve a goal they think is important.

Yes, this is more realistic and also this reflects the real-world experience. Uniqueness in interaction comes from many aspects and not from a single aspect of course. This experience gets highlighted when multiple considerations are taken into account.

Interaction design differs from other types of design that are primarily visual, in that it is the design of systems—patterns of interactivity that include when to streamline the user experience and when to arrest users’ attention. It is the creation of effective processes and requires the designer to think in terms of points of origination, task flows, and destination points to design experiences.

It's important to favor user feedback and to provide them with a safe space to share it. I used to invite both users and stakeholders to feedback and acceptance meetings. In some of our projects we would have stakeholders, with strong opinions, that contradicted our users. This discouraged users from providing feedback as in some cases the stakeholders were their managers or bosses. Now, I hold separate sessions.

Managing the expectations and diverse perspectives of users and stakeholders can be intricate. It calls for effective communication and negotiation skills to align differing opinions, goals, and preferences. Staying abreast of evolving trends and technologies is another challenge, requiring a commitment to continuous learning to ensure designs remain relevant and innovative... In my own experience, addressing these challenges often involves fostering a collaborative and transparent work environment, where open communication allows for the effective resolution of conflicts and the incorporation of new insights. Embracing the dynamic nature of interaction design is key to overcoming these hurdles and delivering impactful user experiences.

Interaction design is remarkable in its own right because each time a user chooses to engage with a physical or digital product they make an emotional investment. They dedicate their time, effort, and attention to that specific experience. If the experience turns out to be unsatisfactory, it depletes the user's emotional reserves, resulting in a "loss" in their interaction with the website or product. Their time is taken, and their goals are either unfulfilled or disrupted. On the other hand, if the experience is delightful, it becomes like a deposit into their emotional account. Interaction design is a unique discipline because it delves into how to improve those human-product interactions to provide optimised and successful experiences.
