VPN tunnels do provided added security layer to protect you from security threats like MiTM (Man in the middle) attacks, packet sniffing and session high jacking but its does not eliminate the risk completely because you are encrypting your connection but terminating it via a gateway to access the internet. Make sure you choose wisely which VPN provider you are using.

I would disagree that a VPN tunnel can improve your network speed and stability or bypass congested or throttled networks. A VPN tunnel may be able to reduce your latency and that is only if you choose to pick a gateway that is closer to your end point. Network performance is highly dependent on the users connection.

Its highly recommended to make sure, you choose a VPN provider that offers Triple Digital Encryption Standard (3DES) and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for encryption, message digest 5 algorithm (MD5) and Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) for data integrity, and pre-shared keys (PSK) or RSA signatures (also known as digital signatures) used for authentication.

There are multiple methods to use VPN tunnels, Remote access VPNs are agent based you install the app or software on your device and using your credentials from the service provider, you can connect to the VPN gateways. However, i recommend using the builtin functionality of your device when configuring VPN tunnels because that will eliminate any possibilities of installing third party applications on your device.
