I have worked closely as a machine learning researcher during my master’s research. So, the answer I am writing could be a little biased. Still, I strongly feel that if you are interested in research- thinking out of the box, getting into unexplored territories, and ready to fail multiple times to come out with a solution for your design then ML researcher is the role for you. It's different from conventional jobs where you have a particular work to do following some precedent rules; here, you need to be an active thinker and innovator and be creative to succeed. I usually tell people that combining ML with any of the classic fields (such as finance, biology, medicine, engineering) is always a great idea.

Beyond roles like Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or Machine Learning Engineer, one can explore positions like AI Product Manager, AI Ethics Specialist, AI Solution Architect, or MLOps Engineer. When working on projects, prioritize solving the problem first before optimizing the approach. The best advantage comes from integrating various fields—software engineering, data science, and domain expertise—since this amalgamation is hard to automate. MLOps is also crucial, focusing on deploying, monitoring, and scaling ML models effectively in production, ensuring they deliver continuous value.

I believe that different types of data roles are overlapping regarding tasks and responsibilities. However, to make an impact, you can bring your experience and background to the table which might be a hybridization of these roles. However, industrial domain knowledge cannot be negligible regardless of the role. Furthermore, Operations Research Scientist role can also be considered as one of these roles since it requires specific knowledge and expertise.
