What leadership development strategies can increase employee engagement and motivation?

Implementing leadership development strategies that focus on empowering and inspiring employees can significantly boost engagement and motivation. Providing clear communication, acknowledging and rewarding achievements, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and promoting transparency and inclusivity can all contribute to enhancing employee engagement and motivation. Effective leadership development also involves encouraging open dialogue, soliciting feedback, and actively involving employees in decision-making processes. A crucial component in leadership development is the clear definition and communication of an organization's vision. Employee recognition will definitely increase engagement and satisfaction. A point to remember, however, is that people relate to their contributions at work and how they're recognized differently. According to McClelland's motivation theory, every person is motivated by a primary psychological need. A need for achievement, affiliation, or power- influence. While an achiever values realizing their efforts in achieving a goal, an affiliate values emphasizing their efforts on helping others. An influencer appreciates highlighting their efforts in influencing outcomes at a strategic level. Leaders can enhance rewards' effectiveness and increase engagement by using a questionnaire to identify every employee's motivation driver.

Trust is the top factor for employee engagement (Gallup research). Without trust, you'll never have high performing teams or individuals that reach their highest performance. You'll settle for much lower performance and employee wellbeing/happiness/health will suffer (toxic work environments are low trust). My favorite 4 pillars of trust come from The Thin Book of Trust by Charles Feltman. They are care, sincerity, reliability and competence. The key is these qualities are how your people judge you in the 4 areas not how you judge yourself.

Leaders need to watch for "motivation vampires." According to Herzberg's Motivation Hygiene Factor Theory, a set of organizational factors, if left unchecked, can demotivate already engaged and motivated employees. This includes the lack of role security; people are worried about job elimination because of rumors of layoffs or reorganization. Ineffective/outdated policies that stop people from achieving goals. Or ineffective management, including micromanagement or incorrect guidance. Poor working conditions, whether in the physical work environment or toxic relations: backstabbing, isolating, and shunning. These factors obstruct motivation and must be eliminated or mitigated before investing and implementing new motivation strategies.
