What are the latest tools and technologies for improving search and rescue simulation?

The concept sounds interesting from a 30K foot perspective. I read the reference to USAR, but not Wilderness SAR. These are two VERY different environments with VERY different strategies and tactics. To simulate and train in a "non-real" environment is an interesting concept, but the real-time, real-world training result is dubious. All I have, at this time, is my experience, that proves what works and what doesn't.

VR/AR adds lots to SAR simulation; but I still think that everyone needs to work on interpersonal communication. There is a tendency to ignore this aspect once a 'deep dive' is taken into tech.

All said is true ... like anything with man-made answers to questions, what you put in will determine what you get out ... ie. garbage in, garbage out. And then there's the inherent "bugs" in the logic and data base. Not a simple plug and play needing a lot of "off-line" testing against the real world.

Went to a training exercise once where the trainers would identify the leaders and 'take them out' just to see how everyone else would compensate - it was very effective.

This is similar to the situation with larger disaster responses. The responder skill sets can be excellent, but they are often used on a majority of training and on small, quick, local and limited responses. This results in an untested, low experience strategy and management of a large complex incident. This is the real test of a successful, large-scale, multi-agency response (integration of strategy, tactics AND management).

There is often an assumption that everyone is going to learn from the same SAR simulations; but the fact is that individuals respond in different ways to different training methods.
