Great - why not using an OSA - but OSA means several lambda no ? so if you do not have monitor port on the DWDM Mux, it's dead, you have the tool but no way to plug it. OSA will not help you about chromatic dispersion, or you have 2 OSA, able to mesure the signal at each ends of the network and compare the lambda differences.

using OSA means you need multiple lambda and these offered just in DWDM or CWDM, OSA can detect the OSNR level,the wavelength the power but it is not useful in detecting the polarization mode or attenuation also it is too expensive and need plug-in cards

Not only provide visual end face of the fiber core, some can take a photo and store as a record. The advance model can even do a software test with the relevant endface standard and super impose a standard chart over it. Its like you have bench optical test equipment with you in the field. Most of this have some kind of bluetooth interface so you can extract the photos for record keeping off the device else where.

Remember that IR light is invisible, so better not to use the models where you look directly onto the connector, but rather the ones that have a camera (and you view on a screen/laptop). Also remember to use the right adaptor for the type of connector (PC vs APC for example...)

Usually involve long distance fiber optic in outdoor. You will be able to pick up a fiber break or damage (intermittent) quickly if you are well trained on it. You need to know the fiber optic type as required by the OTDR parameters setting i.e. reflective index. Its different for multi-mode and Single Mode fiber core. Within Single Mode fiber there are many different ITU-T standards i.e. G.652x, G.655x. If the fiber is single mode, try 1310nm wavelength and also 1550nm. You need to make a estimate where the fiber break or high Return Loss is. Use Google Map.

If you are playing with 25gb/s take care of dispersion. 100Gb/s take care of FEC and dispersion. Issues are not coming from fibers but from not complete knowledge of the singular media

When dealing with fibres, it's all about good cleaning practices and even better splicing. It's funny how a company can spend millions to dig out fibre cables from the bottom of the ocean and then perform a rubbish splicing... Even if the fibre is fused together, it doesn't mean it's a good optical connection!
