1 Communication skills

Communication skills are vital for EIA practitioners to engage with diverse and often conflicting stakeholders, such as project proponents, affected communities, regulators, NGOs, experts and the media. EIA practitioners need to be able to communicate clearly, respectfully, transparently and persuasively, using appropriate methods and languages for different audiences and contexts. They also need to be able to listen actively, empathize, respond to feedback and questions, and handle criticism and conflicts constructively.

As an EIA practitioner, honing robust communication skills is akin to being a skilled diplomat navigating a diverse world of stakeholders. It's essential to communicate in a manner that is clear, respectful, transparent, and persuasive. Each stakeholder—from project proponents to affected communities—requires a tailored communication approach. Active listening, empathetic engagement, and constructive conflict resolution are key components in my toolkit, enabling me to build bridges across different perspectives and interests.

2 Knowledge and understanding

EIA practitioners need to have a sound knowledge and understanding of the EIA process, the legal and institutional frameworks, the environmental and social issues, the project objectives and alternatives, and the stakeholder interests and expectations. They also need to be aware of the ethical principles and codes of conduct that guide their professional practice, such as respect for human rights, equity, diversity, inclusiveness, accountability and integrity. Moreover, they need to be able to apply their knowledge and understanding to the specific context and circumstances of each EIA case, and to adapt to changing situations and new information.

EIA practitioners need to be able to plan, organize, coordinate, moderate, document and report on these activities, ensuring that they are relevant, timely, accessible, inclusive, participatory and transparent. They also need to be able to foster constructive dialogue, collaboration and consensus among stakeholders, as well as to manage potential challenges, risks and conflicts that may arise during the public participation process.

Analytical skills are important for EIA practitioners to collect, process, interpret and present relevant and reliable data and information from various sources, such as environmental and social baseline studies, stakeholder inputs, technical reports, literature reviews and best practices. EIA practitioners need to be able to critically evaluate the quality, validity and reliability of the data and information, as well as to identify gaps, uncertainties and assumptions. They also need to be able to synthesize and integrate the data and information into coherent and comprehensive EIA reports, that reflect the views, concerns and preferences of stakeholders, as well as the potential environmental and social impacts and mitigation measures of the project or policy.

They also need to be open-minded, curious, creative and innovative, as well as willing to collaborate with others and share their insights and lessons learned.

EIA practitioners need to be able to demonstrate confidence, competence, credibility and professionalism, as well as to articulate a clear vision, mission and strategy for EIA and public participation. They also need to be able to build trust, rapport and respect with stakeholders, as well as to empower, support and mentor others. Furthermore, they need to be able to cope with stress, pressure and uncertainty, as well as to make sound decisions and take responsibility for their actions and outcomes.
