What are the key factors for developing a strong family business culture and values?

One thing I notice is the different language first/second generation family businesses use as compared to those that are older. The ones that have a longer history tend to emphasise legacy, values and purpose far more. The younger family businesses often talk about wealth, growth, and ownership. My research on founder narratives reveals various story-telling scripts that may be less helpful to foster a lasting legacy. It is important to change your language as a business family so that the legacy remains relevant and inspiring for the next generations.

Inclusivity: Involve all family members in defining your purpose and values for broader buy-in. Uniqueness: Tailor values to reflect what's special about your family and business. Goal Alignment: Ensure your values support and align with your business objectives. Integration: Communicate and embody these values across all levels of the business. Adaptability: Be open to evolving your values as the business and family grow.

Conflict Management: Use your core values as a reference for resolving disputes. Legacy Building: Think about how your values contribute to the long-term legacy of the business. Having stated that, I appreciate that in some situations and times, we do this more effectively than in other situations or times. So, one of the ways forward that I have found highly effective in my professional practice is to use the "templates of success" in the areas where the family business is agile in effectively adapting into the key additional areas that could unleash even greater success. Articulating and communicating culture and values is notoriously difficult - or at least to do in a way so as to be meaningful to each employee. We had greater success when we asked employees what behaviours they found acceptable / unacceptable in their day to day role and in their dealings with colleagues, customers and suppliers. We then aligned these to our values, slightly adjusting some of our value, as a result, to be more relevant to today. If you consider that culture is merely the sum total of the behaviours displayed, then behaviours are often an easier place from which to start communicating values - for this is from where they originate.

By soliciting feedback from employees on acceptable and unacceptable behaviours in their roles and interactions, adjustments can be made to ensure relevance. Recognising that culture is essentially the sum of displayed behaviours, this approach facilitates meaningful communication of values and fosters alignment within the organisation.

Communication and collaboration is key to any organization's success. For an organization to operate effectively, team members must remember the 5 C's of communication: 1. Clarity: clear to understand 2. Conciseness: short and to the point (no fluff) 3. Coherence: logically structured 4. Completeness: fully developed 5. Concrete: precise For an organization to operate efficiently, team members must remember the 7 keys of creative collaboration: 1. Ownership 2. Dependability 3. Trust 4. Structure 5. Shared Vision 6. Fun 7. Candor By keeping these keys at the forefront of decision making, the leaders will establish an environment that encourages clear communication and creative collaboration.

A financial literacy program for members as young as 11 years old should be establish to ensure the future generation can help with growth decisiones vs. cash in and/or want to sell the business to a potential buyer that may not have the best interest at hand.

Managing generational differences impacting culture: In many family businesses, when multiple generations work together, each may have their own set of values, priorities, and working styles by social, economic, and technological contexts in which they grew up. This can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings, impacting organization's culture. This can be addressed with open discussions to understand each generation's values and priorities, identifying common ground and shared goals that can unite different generations, and encouraging empathy and respect for each other's perspectives. Willingness to work together and the passion to build a business that creates economic and social value can unite them to build a lasting organization.

Open and honest communication from the outset is key. Clarity over where each family member sits within the structure of the business and their individual aspirations for their own future and that of the business. So often a lack of regular communication leads to younger, upcoming, generations being guided in a direction which does not sit with their own personal skills and aspirations and this leads to conflict further down the line. It is crucial for family members to have regular discussions to ensure that everyone is heading in the right direction for them. Working with an external business coach can help keep the family team on track and accountable to one another as well as the business.
