What are the key components of a threat analysis plan for small businesses?

Don't think in terms of technology or cybersecurity when doing this assessment. Just look at what specific functions your business must do to stay alive. What could kill your business? What would be the worst thing to reduce customer trust in your business? Write down every risk in these categories and then seek other businesses' opinions in your field to see if you missed anything. Finally, if you are in a critical infrastructure industry (this includes farming, utilities, financial services and more) then the FBI may also have some suggestions for you. Prioritize these risks so you can focus on reducing them one at a time.

Define your scope meticulously. Identify critical assets like website, customer data, and payment systems. Consider legal obligations and industry regulations. Assess potential threats, including phishing, malware, and insider attacks. Prioritize based on impact and likelihood. Develop mitigation strategies, encompassing employee training, robust software, and incident response plans. Regularly update the plan to adapt to evolving cyber threats. Remember, proactive planning is key to safeguarding small businesses effectively.

Very few zero days allow an organization to be breached entirely. Most might be a foothold into the organization but require additional vulnerability to pivot and move laterally across the organization. By knowing your attack surface, and addressing your known vulnerabilities, the threat of a zero-day is greatly reduced.

An attack chain is just that, a series of events that lead to an overall breach. That chain of events may include vulnerabilities, but not every step has to or will include vulnerabilities. The thing to understand is how a vulnerability may "likely" be used by an adversary to move further along the chain or closer to your sensitive data. Contextual awareness is a mandatory decision criteria towards prioritizing fixing vulnerabilities. That decision criteria could effect 1 system or multiple systems. Arbitrary internal process rules should be avoided at all costs when prioritizing vulnerabilities with a strong likelihood for exploitation.

This can be hard for a small business, but even if all you do is have excellent logging in your environment you will at least have data to better understand any security incidents that do occur. This will lead to a faster remediation of the attack.

The main area to focus on in practicality .. SMB environments are quite different from large size companies with a heavy focus on SaaS and other cloud services. They are also quite stretched for resources so giving them a focused action plan with 5 to 10 actionable points is way more achievable than a 10 page document that will never get implemented in the first place
