Sustainability targets & related initiatives/ achievements within a company’s sphere of influence is usually what most companies start with in their Sustainability Journey. They soon realise that to address some of the key issues in Sustainability at scale (e.g. water conservation & replenishment, climate change & reducing GHG emissions, etc.) need the collective effort of multiple organisations to drive impact. We see this in Bengaluru (India’s Silicon Valley) where multiple companies and the government came together to help in the cleaning/ restoration of certain lakes. Similarly, combined impact efforts resulted in improving mangroves restoration along the coast of Maharashtra, an Indian state.

Through my involvement in an impact accelerator, I've witnessed the power of collective impact. Instead of competition, we prioritize collaboration, fostering an environment where startups, like one planting trees in Ukraine and another preventing wildfires, join forces. By connecting them and facilitating partnerships with organizations like Ecosia, we amplify their impact exponentially. It's a ripple effect, starting small and growing into powerful waves of change, driven by our shared vision of a better future.

Certain sectors like pharmaceutical have the challenges in managing as well as avoiding the unavoidable waste. Industries that have adopted circular practices can explore ways by which such unavoidable wastes can be used to create value and craft products that not only adds material value but also makes positive environmental and social impact. As rightly phrased "United we stand, divided we fall."

There's many examples around fashion and wearables made out of recycled or up-cycled materials.

For example programs for supporting corporate sustainability may require partnerships with an organisation with expertise with carbon markets, and another with tools for risk assessment while the decabonzation strategy can be taken up internally. Additionally partnerships with start ups can help in finding innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency, water efficiency. Finally a civil society partnerships can build knowledge content as well as support a policy push. Sustainability requires an integrated approach so partnerships are essential to achieve the desired result.

Let's not forget the important dimension of leadership. If these different partnership models are to live up to their full potential - including benefits for all parties - those leading the process need uncommon skills of non-judgemental listening, and the competence to create space for transformative learning.
