Institutions with rigorous admissions requirements recruiting students with advanced diplomas and advanced experiences vs. institutions with less rigorous requirements in effort to provide educational access to all--well these factors should all be weighed determining assignments. If the objective in a classroom is to teach, then learning must take place. If the objective in a classroom is to weed students out, then a professor can assign whatever they like, passing and failing students accordingly. Great professors look for scaffolding opportunities; they meet students where they are rather than leave them.
