I love the word Hybrid; I like hybrid work or hybrid cars, but in projects, I hate what we have now, at least in Spain, what I've called WaterGile. That is, we want to work per Sprint with unlimited changes along the way, but with a delivery date, scope, and a closed contract?? WTF?? This particular style in Spain does nothing but burn out employees, lose relationships with clients, generate delays, stress, and unnecessary tensions.

The key to striking the right balance between Waterfall and Agile in my experience is to aim for the optimal philosophical blend of predictability and flexibility. The business requires predictability to meet commitments. The team (and the business) prefers flexibility to work around obstacles and take advantage of emergent opportunities. The middle ground where these philosophies can reasonably co-exist is bounded by the development capacity you allow for it. In other words, if you have a subset of "must have" features, those should be planned in pure Waterfall manner - with capacity reserved for them. Other features of a "should/could/nice-to-have" nature can live on a prioritized backlog and be treated in a more pure Agile manner.
