What are the essential skills and qualities of a successful motion designer?

Go out and get inspired. Go to Dribble, Behance, Motionographer, Art of the Title, and watch and watch. Find the niche that really lights you up, then find out how to do it. If you're just starting out, definitely copy work to try learning how to do it. Definitely give credit where it's due too.

A motion designer must be patient and detail-oriented because every frame and pixel matters. Ultimately, I believe a successful motion designer, like any other professional, must genuinely love their job and have a passion and enthusiasm for the path ahead!

Before starting a motion design project you must be very clear about the basics of gaphic design. For me the ones you should always find are: Balance, Unity and Alignment. As you know there are some more (Repetition, Proximity, Hierarchy, etc, etc) but if you want to give life to a static design first of all, the image must feel balanced, aligned and as solid as Unity.

Studying professional projects can provide invaluable insights into core animation principles like timing, spacing, easing and anticipation. The goal is to master animation techniques to bring your visions to life, and learning from masters is often the fastest route.

The 10 Principles of Motion Design are an invaluable tool. These were laid out by the magnificent jr.canest (Ordinary Folk), and were adapted from the 12 Principles of Animation developed by master animators during the golden age of Disney animation.

You are an Attention Manager. You design the entire experience, and if you do it well, nobody is thinking about you and how cool you are, they are caught up in the whirl, and they arrive right where you want them to, naturally.

If you're looking to get into After Effects, one project/exercise I've found to be helpful is animating icons. Icons are simple projects but, with repetition, can become great teachers of the essential foundations of motion design; keyframes, expressive motion, and the graph editor. Good story is built on re-writing. Drafts can be iterated upon quickly when the medium is simple: paper and pencil. Go from writing to sketching to mood-boarding to style frames to storyboards BEFORE any animation keyframe is made. Also, as always, get inspired first.

If you are getting comfortable with After Effects then Premiere will be an easy lift. Get good at the basics of assembling edits together. Editing is painful in After Effects.

In addition to the basics of cutting and arranging, transitions, and storytelling, it is important to understand some of the more nuanced elements of design techniques outside of the fundamentals. There are hundreds of ways to combine, arrange and layer effects to create a combined overall look. Are you familiar with how layer styles work? How do track & and alpha mattes drive an effect? Can you combine effects to create something wholly new? For example, you can plug a video luma matte into the bump and alpha factors of a shader in Blender, to drive the reveal of a project in 3D space, using 2D elements.

It was really through video editing that I found a love for motion design. My experience as an editor helped me learn pacing, visual hierarchy, and consistency, all of which are vital to quality motion design.

Patience with your client is Huge! Try to keep in mind that they may not know how to convey exactly what they want, which can easily lead to confusion and frustration. Open communication and a calm demeanor will definitely lend to a successful and positive project and repeat clients

Just have fun and be weird. There's no rules or limitations except the ones you put to yourself. Learn to turn what you perceive as your weakness into a style, learn to get away with your mistakes. Don't get lost following advice, make your own advice... to yourself.

Practice, practice, practice. One thing I've found helpful, especially in the initial stages of learning how to become a successful motion designer, is to keep going at it. Try out new techniques, look up tutorials, get inspired by what others are doing, and try to recreate that in your own time and with your own twist. Give your personal touch to everything you do.

If you want to get better at motion graphics, make it a habit to practice regularly. Start by studying the work of skilled designers on platforms like Behance and Dribbble to learn their techniques and styles. Experiment with different types of media and software tools such as Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, or Blender to achieve the motion effects you're aiming for and to broaden your creative abilities. Try recreating designs to refine your skills and uncover your own unique strengths in motion graphics. Consistent hands-on practice is key to improving your craft.

Save enough time for enhancing, reviewing, and improving your work. If the deadline is approaching and your goal is simply to finish and submit it, you will miss the opportunity to refine both your artwork and your skills. Avoid focusing on the project for too long, try doing something else, and come back to it later. You may find new inspiration in the process.
