What are the essential skills and competencies for an ESP teacher and how do you develop them?

My belief is that a teacher should be an active researcher and always be seeking new tools to assist our learners in better ways of understanding. We are a bridge, we help our students by passing it on. According to my experience, I believe that it is really necessary to collect the necessary information to provide students the assistance they need to succeed in their personal goals. general english is helpful but specific english is meaningful.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be an expert in the content, and it is always advisable to be transparent with students and allow them to realize that you are a language teacher at the end if the day and bit an expert in the subject area. You are there to equip learners with the necessary learning skills to be able to read specific academic texts, use language specific to their fields and write reviews, comparative analysis of research in their field; in shirt, equip learners with the skills to prosper in their fields.

ESP should incorporate the so-called apprentice model, where the student teaches you and you facilitate the language. One of my earliest experiences almost 20 years ago was teaching an associate professor of surgery in Italy. I would go into his surgeries with him and observe as he talked me through them. Before the surgery, I would study the one I would be observing, in the English anatomy book he had lent me. Allowing me to understand content pre-surgery. In surgery, standing behind him, I corrected when I could the spoken errors, or made a mental note for later feedback, ESP requires the teacher to walk a mile in the student's shoes, and most probably have higher-order thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Being aware of the teaching context enables ESL teachers to make informed decisions that enhance the effectiveness of their teaching and support the learning process for their students. Therefore, teachers need to consider cultural aspects, their learners’ needs and educational backgrounds, the sociopolitical context, their learners’ proficiency levels and the classroom dynamics among others.

A successful ESP teacher will always attempt to make connections between content and real life. For example, when teaching ESP computer Science classes, a bit of research into what subjects the students are studying can guide me through what texts I should be choosing for them to read. This way they can make connections between ESP and their other subjects. E.g. for computer science ESP modules, I choose research articles about machine learning or artificial intelligence and ethical issues around AI. For calculus students, who mostly study probability and statistics, linear algebra, I choose academic texts, for example, doomsday theory( probability of the end of the day). Scholars have an equation for this, would you believe?

For learners who are already working, set up role plays, simulate telephone calls, or write emails with them that follow as closely as possibile their real interaction with clients, suppliers, colleagues, and managers. Focus on functional language such as interrupting, disagreeing, asking for a consensus, asking for clarification, making plans to meet again next week, etc. Help them understand how to better sound polite and professional. Have them practice what to do when communication breaks down and how to rephrase or come at it from another angle.

I agree, it's not just customisation that is crucial but also continually customising and adapting to the needs of your learners and also situations. The world is a continually changing place and that needs to be reflected in your teaching

Tailor activities and materials to accommodate different learning styles and levels of language proficiency. This can involve providing additional support for beginners or more challenging tasks for advanced learners. Also, you can modify existing texts or create new materials to suit the students’ proficiency levels and interests. This could involve simplifying complex texts or adding glossaries for challenging vocabulary.

I absolutely agree with the above. Effective ESL teaching does not teach skills in isolation. Scaffolding may happen with vocabulary, discussion, brainstorming or watching a related Ted lecture or listen to a podcast that provides background information about the topic prior to reading. ESP teaching doesn't exclude good ESL methodologies, rather utilises them in the most effective ways possible.

Integrating skills will certainly solidify and strengthen holistic learning. I've found prioritizing 'productive language' whilst considering the four language modalities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) can accelerate a learner's journey and boost their confidence as this approach makes the learning meaningful and impactful.

Training in the ESP realm is an essential aspect to work over since in many countries, English teachers have to face the challenge to teach an ESP course and they do not know where to start, what and how to do it. It is important to understand that an English teacher needs to be prepared to cope with ESP teaching courses, as it is taken for granted the fact that if you teach a foreign language for general purposes you can teach ESP too.

Working in groups on a short project is a great way to integrate skills, but you need to make sure the project is feasible and the language required is at or just above the students current level, otherwise they'll just become frustrated.

Design lessons around a central theme or topic that naturally incorporates all four skills. For example, a unit on “environmental issues” could include reading an article (reading), discussing the topic (speaking), listening to a podcast (listening), and writing a persuasive essay (writing). In addition, it is useful to encourage students to keep a journal or blog, where they write regularly (writing), read each other’s posts (reading), comment on them (writing/speaking), and discuss the entries in class (speaking/listening).

Having an expert in ESL teaching work together with a subject knowledge expert is extremely helpful in some areas of English. Becoming an ESP teacher who specialises in one area can help as your knowledge of your chosen industry will increase with every class. For example, working at a law firm and being able to ask a senior lawyer questions about specific uses of terms means that learners are able to get accurate information on the legal interpretation of the language, while also learning from a teacher who understands how to teach English to second language learners.

Collaboration with subject experts can be a life-changing experience. I have witnessed this whilst teaching economics and calculus ESP modules in Canada. However, the reality is that most departments are just simply too busy to make time for this kind of collaboration. They may not see the benefits fully. Supporting learners with subject specific academic language skills is not only beneficial to students but also the department. If learners understand more, submit better quality assignments due to learning subject specific language skills, it all has an impact on the department's success, retention and achievement rates! Still, this concept is often difficult to 'sell'!

I could not agree more. ESP teaching and learning should be an interdisciplinary effort. As an ESP practitioner for over ten years in the area of Maritime English, I experienced firsthand the value of learning and enriching my own practice from the expertise of all kinds of maritime and ship management personnel. Mostly these were the students themselves, but we also relied on the expertise of colleagues working in other departments. Collaborating with these professionals was key to choosing, adapting and designing material best suited to the needs of our students. In fact, you really are a teacher and a student at once.

Other professionals, such as subject matter experts, can provide specialized knowledge and insights that enrich the content of ESL lessons. For example, a science teacher can explain complex concepts more effectively, or a business professional can provide real-world examples of business communication. It’s also important to consider that theses professionals can offer guidance and advice on career paths, academic opportunities, and real-world applications of language skills. This can be especially valuable for students preparing for specific careers or academic pursuits.

The good old student survey never lies. The problem is that most instructors distance themselves from the students or simply are afraid to collect feedback on their own teaching. A great ESP teacher has the hunger to continually improve and as part of this process students feedback and reflection are crucial. An anonymous form quiz or a poll ( where you are not collecting names!) provide a platform for student feedback in a most positive, constructive way. I do it after each semester and always find 'magic'. What magic? Students share feedback like what makes the class amazing, the activities they enjoy or dislike. In the end, feedback is essential and a great ESP teacher gathers it in the most non threatening ways.

Teachers can use exit tickets at the end of lessons to gather immediate feedback on what students have learned and any areas of confusion. This quick assessment can inform future lesson planning. It’s also important to involve students in assessing their own progress through self-assessment activities. This can include checklists, self-reflection journals, or goal-setting exercises. It encourages metacognition and helps students take ownership of their learning.

Lifelong learning indeed: we tell our students to forever learn, improve to keep up with competition, to feel confident in knowledge and to always seek ways to improve their skills sets. Lifelong learning is the key. I recall as a casual assistant professor working in Higher Education: for 8 years I held an ESP Teaching job that granted me steady employment whilst others were struggling to pick a few hours if EAP. Why? Most EAP teachers are not comfortable with teaching content specific academic language skills. Perhaps because of the steep learning curve or the time investment in preparation for these ESP classes. Who knows? In the end, ESP is outside many lecturers comfort zone.

I believe essentially all English teaching is English for Specific Purposes in that we should identify students’ needs and design and develop the course and materials accordingly to suit the needs of learners. Needs analysis, constant classroom observation and the question of ‘ tell me what you need English for and I will tell you the English that you need’ (Hutchinson and Waters, 1987), are all important components of any English teaching and learning effort.

An unfailing spirit of inquiry, a curiosity for the students’ subject specificities. An ESP practitioner is a detective of sorts, one who is ready to assess and reassess the needs of the learners. Needs analysis being at the core of any ESP teaching effort, the ESP practitioner is ready to negotiate with the students in terms of what teaching materials make more sense within the context of such needs as May have been informed by needs analysis.
