What are the essential skills for 2D animators?

In my experience, Drawing skills is the first and foremost fundamental for Animation itself, In 2D animation drawing skills makes the animation alive, makes the 2D in a more appealing way, tackling all variables, dimensions, volume, perspective, composition, balance and more to enumerate. Drawing skills is a tool for 2D animators to improve on, it's a never ending learning, it empowers us artists to create and communicate.

For 2D animation, drawing skill is very essential. It not only helps in story boarding but also helps in developing the visuals. But at the same time it is also true that I have many friends with pathetic drawing sense yet they create wonders when it comes time to 2D animation

Of course, drawing skills are essential besides the creative and aesthetic imagination. Drawing skills also help you develop the visual style, express the ideas, and communicate with clients and collaborators.

Drawing is very usefull but not necessarily a must. 2D animation is not only limited to the traditional frame-to-frame; in my time as a Motion Designer I've met a whole bunch of amazing animators that did no excel at drawing (some of the truly 'sucked'), but were able to deliver amazing pieces of design and animation.

Animation software comes in two main flavors: 2D animation and 3D animation. Here's a quick breakdown to help you choose: 2D Animation: Great for creating cartoon styles, explainer videos, and character animation. Popular options include Adobe Animate (formerly Flash), Toon Boom Harmony, and OpenToonz (free and open-source). 3D Animation: Ideal for complex characters, realistic scenes, and special effects. Your 'weapon-of-choice' will end up shaping the path you take on the animation carreer. Of course mastering it is a must, but take your time. Play with them (almost every animation design has student/learning licenses), see wich one fits your style and/or liking more. Some stuff can only be nicely done with a specific tool, others can be achieved in many ways using an array of different softwares. There will always be room to explore!

This is the foundation. It is BASIC, but at the same time it will make your job STAND OUT. Master the principles (basically by knowing that you will ALWAYS have something to improve) and even a 'simple bouncing ball' can become a masterpiece.

First thing as an animator is knowing how to and why to animate. You can animate a circle, a stone or a human. Also, knowing when to exagerate for making it more commercial is a good skill.

Personally, for me, this is the golden ticket. Storytelling is what gives SOUL to your perfectly crafted work. Without storytelling there's only a wooden character, Pinochio only comes to life when there a life itself to be told. Even if you're animating simple shapes and colors, try imagining them with a character, a life.

Communication skills are like superpowers for navigating life! They encompass how you express yourself and understand others. Here's the gist: Speak Clearly: Express yourself concisely and articulately. Active Listening: Pay close attention, not just waiting for your turn to talk. Body Language: Use gestures, eye contact, and posture to add impact. Read the Room: Adapt your communication style to the situation and audience. Empathy Matters: Try to see things from the other person's perspective. Sharpen these skills, and you'll connect better with everyone you meet!

You can move fast alone, but you'll move further with companions. Be kind, be respectfull, be honest, don't be afraid of letting anyone down. If you can't do a job, say you can't. If you feel a budget is too short for you, be honest and kind (it's their budget, not yours). If you feel you won't be able to deliver it on time, warn in advance. Communicating is a form of respect.

Effective Time Management: A successful 2D animator must master time management skills to meet project deadlines. Prioritizing tasks is crucial for 2D animators to focus on critical elements first. A character designer efficiently completed a complex animation project by prioritizing key scenes and allocating time accordingly. Being adaptable allows 2D animators to adjust to changing project requirements or unexpected challenges. Managing stress is essential for maintaining creativity and productivity in animation work. A motion graphics artist utilized stress-relief techniques to stay calm during tight deadlines. Constantly seeking to improve skills and learn new techniques is vital for 2D animators to stay competitive in the industry.

Acting skills are crucial. Animator has to understand the power of body language to be able to create strong poses that translate emotions. Facial expressions, the logic of the words when characters speak to emphasize the action. In general- animators have to practice acting the characters they’re animating.

Understanding the requirements and grasping the concept are indeed essential skills for animators. Animators need to translate abstract ideas or concepts into visual representations. This requires the ability to visualize scenes, characters, and actions based on written scripts, storyboards, or verbal instructions. Strong visualization skills enable animators to bring concepts to life in a visually compelling manner.
