What are the effects of standardized testing on educational reform?

As an entrepreneur in the Ed-Tech sector, it is evident that standardised testing has influenced curriculum development. The commonly used, 'teaching to test' approach can limit creativity and make students restricted only to academics. On the other hand, Ed-Tech smartly focuses on buulding a holistic experience and helping the student, not just be good at academics but also build their cognitive and creative abilities. Hence, we need to change the standardised testing methods and move towards a technology to make tests more meaningful and fun to attend.

An overemphasis on standardized tests as the metric determining success is a significant detriment to students. Standardized tests have and will always be important ways to measure certain capacities but two problems have formed from them. One, a focus on the "bubble kids" or the students who are right on the cusp of or just over proficiency leaving highly proficient and well below proficient students out of the conversation. Two, the tests become the metric by which we predict success while discounting soft skills like grit, tenacity, compassion, perseverance, etc.

Standardized tests can highlight achievement gaps between different groups of students, such as those based on socioeconomic status, race, or disability. This data can drive reforms aimed at closing these gaps and promoting educational equity. However, critics argue that these tests can also perpetuate inequalities by failing to account for the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of students.

In California, if you want to see high test scores, you just look for the schools and districts with the lowest population of low income students. Oddly enough, difference is true for low income students in rich areas vs. poorer. Even though the LCFF has shifted funds into districts with higher needs, the academic improvement is lagging. We still want students to be proficient in things like English, Math, and Science but we also don't want them to believe they are limited by their test scores. We want to consider all the student overcomes just to be present or to participate. Above all, at this time, we must convey to students that they are seen and we believe they can achieve.

We must look at multiple measures to build policy and not just standardized tests. We must look at growth and not just grade level proficiency. We must look at grit, compassion, connectedness, business sense, etc. Or we will be building a school system continuously off of the flawed belief that a students success and future success is tied to these tests and we will reinforce their preemincance in schooling because we are too lazy or the system is too large to investigate other metrics.

Standardized testing results often influence educational policy and legislation. For instance, policies like the No Child Left Behind Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act in the United States have been shaped significantly by standardized test outcomes. These policies can drive widespread changes in educational standards, accountability measures, and funding.

Standardised testing methods gives a high amount of autonomy to the teachers, making the entire process of teaching monitored and managed by them. Because of this, a lot of times, teaching carries a 'one-size-for-all' approach, making it difficult for every student to understand and for the teacher to adhere to every student. This is where Ed-Tech helps in creating personalised learning and helping each student learn at their own pace. This reduces the pressure of competition and stress and allocates resources with equity :)

If states communicate clearly the content of standardized tests it can open up an avenue by which teachers feel more confident with the learning of their students and give them a new level of autonomy in their scope and sequence. While the exact content of these standardized tests remain veiled there will always be the tendency to try to determine the priority standards by some means and then dedicate too much time to them. It's a recipe for failure.

It is hard to communicate to students that these assessments don't define them or control how successful they can be when we have communicated this both actively and passively for so long. We have told students on the other side of these tests - particularly the SAT and ACT - is the future they had hoped and dreamed and those pathways are the only means. That's just not true. Some stress can't be alleviated and good stress is a thing. I am not convince tests need to be anxiety free but I am convinced that students who believe their future is on the line, they will be stressed.

The pressure to perform well on standardized tests can lead to increased stress and anxiety among students. This can negatively impact their overall well-being and attitude toward learning. Some reforms have sought to address these issues by reducing the number of tests or changing the way test results are used.

Ultimately, our goal is to create an inclusive educational system where EVERY STUDENT matters, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds. A system that nurtures diversity, promotes equity, and celebrates the unique strengths and talents of each individual. The current use of standardised testing also links directly to the ranking and measurement of pupils in league tables - attainment and progress scores. This often further narrows a schools curriculum if the subject area and accreditation suite does not carry an attainment score that will allow schools to measure a neutral or positive Progress 8/Attainment score. We find then that schools stop delivering quality first teaching, especially towards SEND pupils which then reduces the access to the schools curriculum for lots of pupils. This in turn means that schools will state they cannot meet the needs of pupils with an EHCP if the young person cannot access accreditations which carry these points or off roll pupils to remove their score.
