The most success I've had is fully dependent on context requiring some level of understanding of the audience's personalities and interests. While formality is often preferred, if you can figure out a way to underscore the part most important to the data in both overt(clear, concise, and decisive wording) and subtle cues (color, font, quotations). Folks see graphs and charts all day, if you can make your data somewhat unique in either how it's presented or how it's delivered provides emphasis even if it detracts from formality.
