What are effective ways to communicate the importance of color schemes and materials in design to clients?

I like to start by asking the client about strong color preferences. What art or objects do they want to incorporate into their new abode? If they aren't set on specific items of color, it's up to me - which is fun. The architecture, and setting, (ocean/desert/mountain), provide hints for the color palette using a flat lay of objects. Included are fabric swatches, wood, metal, stone, etc., depicting my recommendation for the color scheme. This gives us a launch point. We zero in on the palette together.

I generally prefer to ask the colour test of client, either light or dark. And then categories dark and light colours, prepare some mood board and present to them. Let them know the importance of each colour and relation with one's emotions status and personality. And show some previous designs. Client pick some parts of the privious designs or ask for more options. This trial is allow me to reach close to the client taste. And finally I prepare the design what client exactly want.

Case studies and examples will be a great way to show how effective the use color is. Not just reply on positive case studies. Use case studies where color was not used effectively and explain why it would have been done better. This can help carry your idea across in a more powerful way. Showing just the good case studies may alude to the fact that successful color usage happens naturally, when it really needs to be carefully planned out.
