What effective strategies can you use to support coachees during supervision?

Coaching supervision is a reflective process designed to enhance coaches' competence and ensure they are fit for purpose. Group coaching supervision, a form of supervision involving a group of coaches working with a trained supervisor, offers a platform for reflection on their coaching practice, learning from each other, and receiving feedback and support. In a coaching safe environment where the alliance is designed and trust is built, it is instrumental that a structure is put in place. The coach needs to be held accountable of the milestones they commit to with the coach. Fixed dates and times are a requirement!

One of the approach I learned during the coaching of leadership is to identify the comfort zone of the coachee and to move him/her regularly in those zone. This helped balance the perspective and the understanding of the question to be solved. Describing a comfort zone is not a vocable description but more a behavioral perception that needs to be tested during the first days of coaching.

To effectively support coachees during supervision, begin by thoroughly understanding their needs, goals, and learning preferences. This foundational step enables you to customize your approach, choosing methods and tools that resonate best with each coachee. For instance, some may thrive with structured guidance and regular feedback, while others might excel with more autonomy and opportunities for self-exploration. Focus on what the coachees aim to achieve; some may seek to develop specific skills or address particular issues, while others may wish to explore broader themes and opportunities.

Often, I try to gauge their personality, self awareness and learning style during an informational call. Sometimes leaders are struggling but aren't sure why. During our sessions, we analyze past hurdles and I offer alternatives in body language, tone, word choice and timing. We also discuss the many ways they could be perceived, based on the identity and reactions of the person they were engaging. Relationship building is one of the biggest keys to success with any of your stakeholders. I also help them to look for patterns in feedback or results from others. Many progress roadblocks were due to a lack of trust or relationship. Then we can explore vision, methodology and professional development.

In coaching, establishing rapport and trust is a cornerstone for successful supervision. This approach creates a safe and supportive space for coachees to discuss their challenges and triumphs openly. Building this trust involves consistently showing empathy, respect, and genuine interest in their journey. It's more than just a professional obligation; it's about forming a human connection that acknowledges their unique experiences and aspirations. Active listening skills are fundamental. Using open-ended questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing shows your understanding and encourages coachees to delve deeper into their thoughts and feelings. This approach invites richer conversations and more meaningful insights.

Having worked in HR for many years, I have plenty of stories that normalize what the coachee is experiencing or learning. Nothing is new under the sun! I also create a safe space to debate feedback. Sometimes coachees think I'm way off base, until we solicit feedback from others or give the tool/change/method a chance. Finally, the coachee has to know we are invested in their growth and happiness. A good coach allows you to try on different versions of yourself and walk away with the one YOU like the best.

One beautiful way to put it is to simply ask, "How are you going to ensure that you'll do what you plan to?" and then see what the person comes up with. If we believe that people are naturally creative, full of resources and whole, we don't need to be their "controllers", and their actions are ultimately for themselves, and not to please us as a coach.

It involves guiding coachees to set achievable goals and holding them accountable for their progress. Encouraging coachees to establish milestones and indicators of success helps them monitor their journey, providing clear markers of progress and areas needing improvement.
