As the Chair of Surgery 15 years ago I put a team together to develop a policy for parental leave. The surgery residents (the learners) generated the ultimate policy with faculty supervision and support. In the end, surgery was the first medical school department to have maternity and paternity leave policies. They live in a present they seek to change looking to a transformed future. With such a transformative dynamic mindset it is acceptable to propose a transformative policy for students and the society they live in. Master communicating this dynamic perspective and its strategic objectives. Policies get rejected for poorly communicated problems, challenges, and benefits. Futuristic policies tend to be rejected as unrealistic. Proposing a policy needs to be done with realism explaining the unpalatable processes and hard steps in the short run leading to better conditions.

One of the things I have NOT run across in my 1/2 century of teaching is teachers asking for more involvement in the actual teaching. Someone is telling them what to teach, how to teach, which curriculum to use, and how to present the material. I get the feeling that those outside the classroom have no confidence in the ability of teachers to reach all their students. But we do. We teach in underfunded schools; we work with uncooperative parents. We work in locations where education is cheap daycare. We are threatened and bullied by administrations, school boards, parents, and students, and yet we teach. Adding more policies is not going to make a significant difference in what we do every day. Just get out of the way and let us teach.

Ne présumons pas simplement que nous savons ce dont ils ont besoin uniquement parce que nous avons été ou sommes des élèves, des étudiants, des enseignants, des instituteurs, des parents ou des adultes. Les temps changent, tout comme les mentalités et les générations. Qui mieux qu'un élève pour savoir de quoi il a besoin afin de devenir un meilleur élève.
