Before you start reaching out to potential peer mentees, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve from the relationship. What are your specific learning goals, interests, and challenges? What kind of peer mentee are you looking for? What value can you offer to them? Having a clear and realistic vision of your objectives will help you narrow down your search and communicate your expectations.

Mentorship are mutually beneficial for mentors and mentees when the pairing is right. As you build out your objectives, remember that your "WHY" matters very much to those you identify. It's not enough to be interested in a person and what to learn from them while offering something token/easy for you to give. You are asking for them to trust you with their development - and that won't happen if your "why" solely focuses on your own needs to learn or be generous without a sense of connection. Often times, my clients have described feeling tokenized by someone who was newly interested in learning about "people like them" and offered their mentorship in exchange... but feeling like a token doesn't engender trust or connection.

2 Research and select your peer mentees

Once you have defined your objectives, you can start looking for peer mentees who match your criteria. You can use various sources to find potential candidates, such as online platforms, professional associations, alumni networks, or referrals from your existing contacts. However, don't just rely on the profiles or resumes of the people you find. Do some research on their background, achievements, and interests to see if they are compatible with you and your goals. You can also look for signs of their willingness and availability to engage in a peer mentoring relationship, such as their participation in online forums, events, or groups.

Research should mean more than reciting someone's online biography. Many executives don't like bio-based praise and find it presumptuous when someone reads their resume as if they "know them." Research that builds connection will include an understanding of you see and why it resonates. What (if anything) have they said about it.

3 Initiate and build rapport

After you have identified a few peer mentees who interest you, you need to initiate contact and establish rapport with them. You can send them a personalized message that introduces yourself, explains your purpose, and expresses your interest in connecting with them. You can also mention something that you have in common or that you admire about them, such as their work, skills, or achievements. Be respectful, courteous, and genuine in your communication. Avoid being too pushy, salesy, or demanding. Remember that you are not asking for a favor, but offering a mutually beneficial opportunity.

As you look to build connections, remember that calling highlights as praise -- but lacking insight --- can come across like flattery (emphasis on FLAT). And while flattery can open doors and get a conversation started, contextualizing your compliment with insight has a better chance of earning you the kind of respect and credibility that makes you a desirable connection. It's a good note to be respectful and courteous, and that also means with the currencies of time and attention. The brilliant best-selling author, Luvvie Ajayi has written on many occasions that your first outreach should be polite, succinct, with a clear request or action included that is a light lift on the recipient.

4 Maintain and deepen the relationship

Once you have established a connection with your peer mentees, you need to maintain and deepen the relationship over time. You can do this by scheduling regular meetings or calls, exchanging feedback and insights, sharing resources and opportunities, and celebrating successes and milestones. You can also explore different ways to collaborate on projects, challenges, or goals that you have in common. Be consistent, supportive, and respectful in your interactions. Don't take your peer mentees for granted or expect them to do everything for you. Show appreciation, gratitude, and recognition for their contributions.

Finally, you can expand and diversify your network of peer mentees by connecting with other people who can add value to your learning journey. Be open, curious, and respectful of the diversity and perspectives of others. Don't limit yourself to people who are similar to you or who agree with you. As you look to expand and diversify your network, remember to consider what's in it for others. Diversity of connections should not solely be the goal. It's superficial if that's the only thing. What are you doing with that diverse network? What kind of relationships are you building? How are you also being an asset to environments that you seek? This is what you'd do across any membership communities that you value - so extend that mindset.
