An engineer in training (now referred to as an engineer intern or EI), needs a 4 year degree from an accredited school and needs to pas the first of two tests, the fundamentals in engineering exam. The education starts there though as they then need to be mentored by a licensed professional engineer for 4 years to become a PE (Professional Engineer). More states allow EI’s to take the PE exam early, before their 4 year tenure which wasn’t always the case.

Todos pueden leer las normas, manuales, recomendaciones y estudios tecnicos, pero la diferencia entre un buen ingeniero estructural es su habilidades suaves (softs skills) , organizar su trabajo ,ser eficiente con su tiempo, encontrar la mejor forma de hacer un calculo sin volverlo tedioso y repetitivo. La habilidad de poder plasmar un proceso matematico tan complejo como el analisis dinamico en columnas y vigas de concreto y acero , tiene su arte sin duda.

He/she should regularly review the regulations and rules and instructions and seek training on new computing software and their relationship. He/ She must know new material and new impelimentation method . In general, his knowledge should be up to date.

A master degree is a good starting point. I'd recommend having few years of experience before enrolling in masters as this will facilitate your coursework, presentations, and even help you with your dissertation topic. If in the UK (or many countries in Europe, Africa, and GCC), join ICE or IStructe and work towards getting chartered in parallel with working as a professional. An EI can own an engineering firm, and can do very well in their career without ever becoming a PE. They just need a PE to be employed in the firm to qualify. In other words, EI’s who are good business people can be very successful if they never become a PE. And being a PE doesn’t guarantee success either. It’s the combination of engineering and business skills that create success in this field. I know EI’s who have written books, get paid for speaking, buy and sell properties, and engage in other activities in the construction field that excel their salary and position. Don’t be limited by your title.

Not all states require a PE before the SE. Be sure to look up the requirements for your state online before studying and know the differences! SE allows structural engineers to work on higher risk projects (such as hospitals). A PE is typically easier to get, and is easier to get reciprocity for in other states.
