A good FW construct starts with a clear understanding of the hardware. Software runs on a abstracted platform; the intricacies of the hardware is hidden by an abstraction layer, rendering it portable and agnostic to HW. But Firmware IS the abstraction layer on which Software runs. A good understanding of the hardware and the software aspects of a system, to initialize and manage the hardware while providing abstracted interface to the software, is key. Firmware Engineers collaborate closely with the Hardware Engineers and software Engineers to define and derive the requirements and decompose them into implementation level details. FW Engineers should choose the correct software constructs, modularity, design low latency, debug etc.

It depends on the company, the role, the industry, etc. I've seen some senior firmware roles that involve writing drivers/firmware for one type of product (say an NVME device) on multiple platforms...period. Others may end up doing firmware++, including what some would call "full stack" development. Still more, if you're involved in FPGA development, you might end up authoring or have a hand in defining the hardware (RTL) code as well. Firmware engineers generally have a solid understanding of the hardware (have perhaps even designed it), the abstraction best suited for its usage, and even how it can best be used on the target platforms/OSes.
