A Senior Product Manager (Sr PM) role varies between companies, but typically involves leading multiple initiatives, teams, and defining OKRs based on business goals. They make crucial decisions, run experiments, and have greater influence. Strategically, a Sr PM owns the roadmap for multiple squads, develops a strong perspective on go-to-market strategies, evangelizes their product and product management practices, mentors junior PMs, and may improve product development processes in their organization.

In simple words… A Senior Product Manager is someone with a big picture vision and is business outcome focused. Often times we tend to focus on what we can deliver than what the end user is expecting. A Senior Product Manager should be able to distinguish between business value of the product vs providing “a” product where users are constantly looking for a simpler alternative. After all Technology is supposed to simplify life by providing a solution.

In a faced paced Product environment, learning and growing may be overlooked as one of the key job requirements of a Sr. PM. In reality, organizations often rely on these skills the most. While “learning and growth” is somewhat generic, in a more specific sense, the learnings and growth internally from one project almost always informs the requirements of another. Gaining a deep knowledge of how an organization conducts business processes can allow a PM to architect solutions and bring the correct heads together when solving problems. There's one sentence in this article about ensuring delivery. But execution and ensuring delivery take a massive share of a Senior PM's mind and time share at most startups. Most PM's spend a lot LESS time on strategy and a lot MORE time on execution than this article might lead you to think. Mentorship is also a much smaller component of the role in reality. At larger companies, a Senior PM is going to deliver less code but touch millions more people, and so the job turns into alignment driving, which is a subset of the section around influence here. At that point the job is to ensure the right decision is made with all the other moving parts of the enterprise. Senior PM is important work, but less glamorous than this article suggests!

A Senior Product Manager is (in short) the ultimate "expert" in the feature or product that they own. This does not mean that they understand how everything works, but they are expected to clearly know what the problem or opportunity is, how is it being solved and what is the benefit of their customer base. A Senior PM, in my opinion is the ultimate version of the true Total Cost of Ownership... Sr PM knows it all or knows someone who does, in and out.

Doesn’t matter! Every org has its own way of providing Job Titles. Investing a bit more time into comprehending the actual job profile (role) than just looking at the job title is essential. Per me, there is nothing significantly different for Sr. Prod Mgr from a Prod Mgrr except for the size and volume of the product and team size. SAFe6 Framework doesn’t recognize a role called Sr. Prod Mgr - It mentions roles like Product Owner and Scrum Master at the team level, Prod Mgr and RTE at the ART level, Sol Mgr and STE at the Solution Train level, and Epic Owner at the Portfolio. Spending time to understand the disparities between Prod Mgr and Sr. Prod Mgr doesn’t yield any benefit; it is like keeping the same wine in a new or bigger bottle.

One thing I learnt when moving in to a Senior Product Management role and have line management/team responsibilities, is that your people become your product. This means the nurture and care you put in to your product now shifts to the people and you should see yourself as the ultimate enabler for them. Making strategic decisions for the product is great and is crucial in this role, but making strategic decisions for your people is even more important. For example, pushing for training to enable your team to increase their knowledge on how to build certain features in the next quarter (engineers, for example) could prove to be the single most valuable contribution you make in that time span.
