What does a security analyst do?

Security monitoring involves constant observation of network traffic, system activities, and data access. This enables the early detection of potential security incidents. SIEM tools are able to collect and aggregate logs from multiple sources within an organization’s IT environment. They analyze this data to identify patterns that might indicate a security threat. On the other hand, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are used to detect unauthorized access or attacks on the network. IDS can be network based or host based and they work by analysing traffic and system behavior for signs of malicious activity.

Security analyst can monitoring information in the environment via multiple ways -Ticketing Systems -Siems - Security Platforms - and yes even Shared Mailboxes The key for effective monitoring is too try to filter out as much junk as possible so that analyst can focus on the important things.

Security Monitoring,also known as Eyes on the glass monitoring is responsible for 24*7 monitoring of all the events in an organisation in a tool called SIEM, such as user logins-logouts, user activities, internet access logs, endpoint device activities, installation of software’s, addition to vip groups, login locations, etc and make meaningful insights by co-relating all the different data sources to distinguish a deviation in normal behaviour of a user or endpoint ,which might indicate a possible threat actor trying to attack the entities of an organization

Security Analysis is alot like the scientific method. Most of the time there is a problem that is potentially happening but now you have to use the data provided to determine if it is true or not.

It's worth mentioning that understanding the distinctions between Security Analysts and Security Engineers is crucial, not only in terms of title but also in the required skills and mindset each role demands. Analysts typically focus on identifying and mitigating threats, requiring a proactive and investigative mindset. Engineers, on the other hand, are builders and protectors of secure networks, systems and applications, requiring a more technical and design-oriented mindset. Recognizing these differences can help in optimizing team performance and ensuring effective cybersecurity strategies. We need both Analysts and Engineers! :-)

They must gather and analyze information to uncover patterns, anomalies, or potential threats. Both roles require analytical thinking to connect the dots and make sense of complex situations. Missing a small detail can have significant consequences. Our daily mission? Finding the needle in the haystack before it knows it's lost.

The security response needs to be well orchestrated to minimize disruption to organization, detect early reconnaissance attempts even before a disruption is successful and analyze trails for deep checks for infiltration earlier. It has to go hand-in-hand with Threat hunting to effectively give coverage for detection, analysis and response.

So what is key in security response? Again, responders must have a holistic view on the breached entity. My main goal in incident response always is to keep the damage to my clients as small as possible. Never do forensics for the sake of doing forensics (except in training). Forensics is there to answer specific questions. These questions/answers are directly or indirectly supporting the main goals of IR. 1.) Reduce the financial and reputation impact 2.) Remove the attacker from the network 3.) Understand what the attacker did to get an idea what future impact the breach might have on the company (e.g. lost trade secrets) 4.) A security response has many aspects to it and the role of a Security Analyst are usually focused in the early steps - Reviewing Alerts and the Initial Investigation. Once it moves to a heightened status - usually more senior focused individuals take over allowing the Security Analyst to return to monitoring stage. Security Analyst should play a major role in an organization's security response.

In addition, security analysts are the backbone of cybersecurity operations. Their expertise, proactive approach, and ability to collaborate effectively are essential for organizations to safeguard their data, systems, and reputation from evolving cybersecurity threats.

While I strongly agree with a lot of this content, it feels quite generic and missing needed nuance. For this section detailing security research, it’s worth highlighting how many real-world positions need to specialize within certain domains. It’s key to understand the depth of domain expertise needed to be successful. For example, two separate companies can advertise a “Malware Analyst” position: one expects basic dynamic analysis skills while the other expects deep reverse engineering experience. Security research is an interesting topic because it combines the practical needs of business with the 'what-if' hacker spirit. Many of the security researchers that I know realized over the course of their career that they had a passion for poking things to see where the seams are. Fortunately, there are great opportunities to make a living doing exactly that; be it through bug bounty programs, 0-day research through efforts such as the Zero-Day Initiative, or from inside an internal security research team at an organization. Security research attracts many of the best and brightest, so it is absolutely the best place to get a feel for what is at the cutting-edge in the security industry.

To add, security analysts play a vital role in promoting a culture of security awareness within organizations. Their efforts to educate, inform, and empower individuals to protect themselves and the organization's assets are essential for building a resilient cybersecurity posture.

A security analyst also contributes to the education and safety awareness of the organization and its stakeholders. This involves the creation and delivery of safety training, workshops or webinars to educate and inform employees, customers or partners about safety topics such as safety policies, best practices or tips. A security analyst also participates in communities, forums or security events, to share and exchange knowledge and experience with other security professionals and enthusiasts.

A security analyst cannot be only a processes and document writer. He must be a a leader, a promotor of the IT security in the organization and also outside. If your goal is to gain experience as an analyst for a few years, then obtaining the CISSP certification may not be helpful. This certification is geared towards the managerial side of things and requires 5 years of proven professional experience as a prerequisite. Instead, if your focus is on Blue Team or Red Teaming, it's recommended that you pursue certifications such as CySA+ and OSCP. Additionally, there are more practical blue team certifications available, such as BTL1, BTL2, Certified Cyber Defender, and eCIR.

I much prefer the industry qualifications such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, CEH etc over academic ones. That's just my personal opinion. Technology changes very quickly so the industry certifications are more relevant.

Tu camino en Ciberseguridad es único, al igual que tu presupuesto. Define tu nivel actual (principiante, intermedio, avanzado) y objetivos a largo plazo antes de invertir en una certificación. Investiga las opciones disponibles en tu área de interés, compara costos, requisitos y beneficios. Revisa la demanda en el mercado laboral. Define cuánto puedes invertir y busca opciones de becas o descuentos. Recuerda que las certificaciones no son el único factor para el éxito, enfócate en desarrollar habilidades prácticas. Participa en proyectos, cursos y talleres para ampliar tu experiencia. Revisa y actualiza tu plan de formación a medida que avanzas, sé flexible y adaptable a las nuevas necesidades del mercado.
