1 Roles and responsibilities

A renewable energy engineer can work in various stages of a renewable energy project, from research and development to design and installation to operation and maintenance. Depending on their specialization and employer, they may conduct feasibility studies and site assessments to evaluate the potential of renewable energy sources and technologies, develop and test prototypes and models of renewable energy systems and components, design and optimize renewable energy systems for different applications, prepare technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for projects, supervise and coordinate the installation, commissioning, and testing of systems and equipment, monitor performance, efficiency, and reliability of systems to identify areas for improvement, troubleshoot technical issues or faults in systems or equipment, provide technical support or guidance to clients or contractors on renewable energy matters, or stay updated on the latest trends in the sector.

Becoming a renewable energy engineer typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, such as electrical, mechanical, civil, or environmental engineering. Some employers may also prefer a master's degree or professional certification in renewable energy engineering or a related discipline. Additionally, you need to have a strong background in renewable energy sources and technologies, as well as an understanding of principles, concepts, and methods of engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer science.
