What does a medical doctor do?

To pursue a career as a medical doctor, one must first obtain a bachelor's degree, often in a science-related discipline, and then apply to a four-year medical school. The curriculum encompasses classroom studies and practical training. Following graduation, passing a licensing exam is essential, followed by participation in a residency program that provides specialized hands-on experience. The duration and intensity of residency programs depend on the chosen medical specialty.

I can tell you what they should do: they should use their knowledge and skills to increase the health of people. That includes all modalities at their disposal: pharmacology, physiology, surgery, etc.. Unfortunately medicine, particularly in the West, has often shifted away from the positive of increasing health to just treating disease. We need a drastic restructuring of medical education in order to do that. In addition to the STEM subjects, we must value critical thinking, courage, ethics and moral reasoning skills. Instead of merely concentrating on imparting explicit knowledge, we must include tacit knowledge as well. We need vertically and horizontally integrated Communities of Practice and make health a Common Pool Resource.

A Medical doctor, independent of their specialty and a long training is a healer not a mechanic. We look at the overall body and soul, including past and present medical, surgical and family history, along with their social, mental health to help to heal and prevent problems. We have vast knowledge and continuing education to stay brisk and up to date with current innovations and development in medicine. The best practice of medicine is to listen to our patient and to stay proactive and preventive of any medical issues. To encourage a healthy Lifestyle, diet, meditation, and wellness awareness to prevent many diseases from early childhood and throughout adult life. We use different technologies to aid us to better help our patients.

Medicine offers diverse specialties like surgery, pediatrics, cardiology, psychiatry, and radiology, each with distinct practices and procedures. Medical doctors can practice in hospitals, clinics, research centers, or private settings. Roles may involve diagnosing, treating, preventing diseases, performing surgeries, prescribing medications, counseling, or conducting research, depending on the chosen specialty.

Clinical rotations can be a great place to get a feel for what your liking for each specialties can be. In addition, looking up job descriptions and looking into lifestyle of each speciality will help to make a sound decision

Of all the medical specialties, cardiology and neurosurgery happens to be my favorite. After my 3 years residency program in family medicine, I worked my first five years in big hospitals. The last decade i have used in occupational health.

No entanto, a especializa??o tem sido cada vez mais exigida, sendo atualmente uma necessidade. Existem dois caminhos para ser especialista hoje: fazer uma Residência Médica ou uma Prova de Título. Na Residência Médica, que dura de 2 a 5 anos, você sai com o título de especialista pelo MEC. A Prova de Título é um concurso (geralmente anual ou bienal) organizado pela Sociedade Brasileira da Especialidade, que possui diversas exigências (geralmente ter Residência Médica na especialidade e/ou ter atuado na especialidade pelo dobro do tempo da Residência Médica) e emite o título de especialista pelo CFM.

Being a medical doctor is considered a very noble profession and rightly so, people see doctors as the image of God, as they have the skills and abilites to diagnose and treat illnesses thus alleviating pain and suffering. So the respect the profession gets is the reward. Today the top two challenges doctors face are - 1) dealing with the "Google Oogle" syndrome wherein patients & families are on google for days and hours before they meet their doctor and it's very frustrating to hear them actually say I read this online.... 2) The bigger challenge doctors face today are the incidents of violence against them when things go south, they are not God but are expected to be all the time and nowdays mobs have a mentality of "might is right" .

The role of a medical doctor brings both challenges and rewards. Long hours, high stress, ethical dilemmas, malpractice risks, and administrative tasks are challenges. However, the rewards include helping people, saving lives, making discoveries, collaborating with professionals, earning respect, and the opportunity for continuous learning, career advancement, and specialization in personal interests.

It takes a minimum of 12 years to become a physician. Physicians paid a price(education, training and debt) to get there that no one else is willing to pay. The challenges are that corporate medicine can blur the lines with medical education equivalency & rigid schedules. The physician is given all the liability while trying to fix the system. They are not given the time for whole patient care due to system and payor constraints leading to burnout. The rewards keep us going. The long term interdisciplinary relationships, sharing tragic and joyful moments, and the honor of taking care of our fellow physicians, nurses and staff have given me purpose. I know I have made a difference and it has kept me grounded with continued faith in humanity.

Being a doctor is an incredible experience of being able to help people from all over the country, with their cultures and needs. Brings us closer to the beauty of human diversity The big challenge is financial, given that the cost has become increasingly high, both for exams and treatments, not being available in all Brazilian realities

Being a physician, the great majority of specialties requires you to like working with people. You must empathize with patients and families. You need to understand that frequently they are seeing you when they are not in a good place. Your communication skills are indeed important, and using those skills while understanding what a patient is going through will help you know HOW to communicate with patients and families at different phases of your journey with them. Listening is key not only for diagnosing their medical issues but also how they are coping with their situation.

Skills and qualities differ from specialty to specialty. Aesthetic and Pro-Aging Medicine takes a skillset of Art and Science to support patients to be their best selves and also look their best selves. Ethics, Empathy and Professionalism should be at the core of each doctor’s armamentarium.

We need to master the clinical knowledge of medicine. We have to update ourselves. Moreover, we need to develop our leadership qualities. Professionalism is mandatory.

One of the basic skills a doctor need is "clinical skills" and this develops with time. The ability to even notice up to the smallest detail in a patient is very useful in daily diagnosis.

There are a lot of areas on the business/marketing side of healthcare that you can become a part of. The niche I have found is physician relations. I help them build relationships with referring providers.

For those not in the medical field but desiring to collaborate with physicians, understanding their roles, responsibilities, and expectations is crucial. Respecting their expertise, authority, and autonomy, along with clear, honest, and respectful communication, is essential. Although challenging, working with physicians offers opportunities to learn, support, contribute, improve skills, knowledge, and enhance career prospects.

One of the best aspects of healthcare is that it is a team sport! Like any team, everyone on the team matters, and is integral to the goal of helping people. So if becoming a medical doctor isn't for you, the good news is that there are a host of other options (clinical and non clinical) that you can choose that will still allow you to be "out on the field" helping patients.

Working with physicians can be both challenging and rewarding. Most physicians rely on support team members to help navigate billing, coding and regulatory rules. A qualified and communicative support team member allows the physician to focus on what they do best. The relationship works best when there is trust in the team member’s knowledge of and ability to apply and explain rules, and the physician is approachable, inquisitive and responsive. Challenges occur when the team member lacks credibility and/or the physician is unapproachable.

As a medical doctor, another very important aspect is giving yourself over to lifelong learning, un-learning and relearning. Over time there will be changes or adjustments in management of specific diseases and illnesses, which requires you as a medical doctor to understand and hereby better manage your patients you come in contact with.

As a Nephrologist, we need to be up-to-date with all recent advances in the field of nephrology and medicine. Continuous medical update is a must.

A Family Physician a) sees the patients as a complete person, not a problem with specific area that needs fixing b) is trained and prepared to assist the patient with problems from all corners of medicine c) is there to help guide the patient through the medical system and ensure all the right resources are accessed d) accompanies the patient through life from cradle to grave.

Advocate…. Think about this one for a minute-If you don’t advocate for someone, you don’t represent them. When you represent someone you become part of them, you act upon their best interest. You have to ask why………. That’s all that matters….
