What does a head of cyber security do?

The single most important responsibility of a cybersecurity leader is to understand the dynamically changing risk landscape to their sensitive data and underlying operations. Continuously assessing cyber risk is especially important given that both China and Russia utilize criminal organizations as a force multiplier. Unfortunately most cyber professionals focus their days buying the cheapest or coolest toy to meet internal compliance goals; which doesn't reduce risk. A cybersecurity leader should re-evaluate all their systems by recreating ransomware and data exfiltration attacks and take corrective action. Next as all enterprises operate extended supply chains, they should meet with partners to share insights and countermeasures.

Very important perspective from Security head is to have the right team where segregation of duties should be well defined. Each team member coming from diverse skill sets able to deliver results supporting the overall vision of the security department. Being a Head of Security for multiple companies I would say in most cases it requires more technical acumen than a typical CISO role. In some organizations the HoS role could be a role fulfilled by a CISO but with a title changed due to reporting lines or organizational structure. Startups normally have a HoS role over a CISO title for example as the latter title wouldn’t fit with a small team structure. In my experience a HoS has less barriers to entry and doesn’t always require a post graduate degree or plethora of certifications.

grit and perseverance are essential qualities for a head of cybersecurity to possess in order to be successful in their role. Cybersecurity is a constantly evolving field, and it requires a leader who can adapt to the ever-changing landscape and stay committed to the task at hand which is help realise business goals and keep organisation resilient! They are not easily discouraged by setbacks and are willing to learn from their mistakes. They are also able to motivate their team to stay focused and committed to the task at hand.

Hire and Develop the best….. (a wise rubric from a sharper mind than my own) - it’s not complicated - if you have a great team you can overcome any challenge. Without a great team…… good luck to ya.

Infosec topic is on the wave now; don’t try to buy everything willing to read/learn everything. Just go to google and github (first learn how to search) - you’ll be amazed how many resources are available for free.

Cyber security frameworks, policies, and controls are all important - but from my experience, it's key to focus on the most important resource of all - great People. Recruit the best, surround yourself with future titans of the industry, people who work hard, people who care, and most importantly positivity.

It is often easy to end up with scope creep into what the Head of Cybersecurity does and easy to think that he is responsible for all things directly and in-directly cybersecurity. Therefore, it is also important to clarify what the Head of Cybersecurity is not. On the direct front, a healthy cybersecurity culture ensures that RACI is in place, bearing in mind that the Head of Cyber Security while having a big (R) is not the (A) who is often-times the risk owner (or system owner) who can determine asset/project investments, unless s/he is truly empowered. On the indirect front, the Head of Cybersecurity is not the Head of Data Privacy etc, unless his portfolio has expanded to take over such responsibilities, then his title should reflect.

Considering the diversity of the team is so important today. A mix of ages, genders, experience, and backgrounds is essential to solve the problems we experience today.

Although he is listed as head of cybersecurity, a label, he should be more of a Cybersecurity Manager. A LEADER should be sought who plays a fundamental role in the organization, convincing Investors and Directors that it is extremely important to protect assets from various forms of compromise. Work on resilience processes, organizing a Crisis Committee, and ensure that decision-makers understand that absolute security does not exist and that they must be prepared for an incident at any time, which is why they must work on it.

I would like to think this position is the "translator" between senior management and the IT Tech gurus making it happen. Having the skill to communication between these two elements will allow you to go far.
