What does an environmental scientist do?

Many people seek environmental engineers and environmental scientists the same. But, in my point of view, as an environmental engineer, there is a noticeable difference in application. The scientists go in the way of new ways for the environmental problem but the engineers design, fabricate, or implement the proposed method. Both study the same type of courses and tools but the scientists study the human and nature interactions and the engineers go for the implantation of the treatments and solutions. An example is, that there is a need for an aerobic wastewater treatment plant (method by a scientist) in an area, and the engineer designs the treatment plant.

Question is not correct as Environment is not a science and there is not a Environmental scientist. Men will understand, it is similar to MMA (mixed martial arts). You may be champion in mma but will never be master of MMA. Environmental knowledge is combination of different sciences and Ecology is among them. The skills educations depends on the main objective of the professional. If he or she wants to work in a company as mining, industry, oil and gas, wide knowledge is needed, and doesn’t need to be specialized in one discipline. If he or she wants to work in a consultant company, specific knowledge of one discipline is welcome. Because, generalists will not have chances to be good enough, staying in low positions. My advice is start your career being more generalist, and with time, choose one knowledge line which is more valuable for his or her career importance.

A lot of environmental science can be ‘on the job’ learning, especially with site work. Companies seem to be moving away from a necessity for an MSc, but require new starters to be open minded to working away on site. From my experience, this is the best way to develop your skills quickly and jump ahead with your career progression. Most consultancy’s offer work experience or university placements which is a fantastic way of introducing yourself to a potential employer.

Environment is a broad concept that includes climate change, biodiversity, social contribution, and etc. Therefore, it is important to identify niches that attract you to pursue. In identifying these topics, one's expertise and passion often serve as a bridge. For example, students majoring in environmental engineering may be interested in climate change or circular economies, while environmental science majoring students tend to have a passion for environmental conservation or bio-diversity.

I specialise in contaminated land and therefore data analysis, investigating trends, and interpretational skills are a necessity. From my experience in consultancy, the best way to develop these skills are to jump into the deep end. Seek out challenging opportunities and you’ll develop fast than you think.

(1) Social Affair The environment is often considered a part of sustainability activities and often collaborates with departments that engaged in social affairs. (2) Operation Climate change, water, waste, etc. are hot topics for many companies. Therefore, an environmental scientists sometimes collaborate with the manufacturing and supply chain departments that are the main sources of emissions. (3)Public Relations Many stakeholders are interested in a company's environmental impact and activities. Therefore, stakeholder management in cooperation with the public relations department is required.

I work in contaminated land, which has been a lot more varied than I first thought. Your early years may be spent on site or developing skills across a wide range of topics, slowly leaning towards a sector to specialise in. I had a keen interest in PFAS and data analysis and have been able to focus on these areas as my career progresses. Other area of contaminated land may include: human health, controlled water, chemistry, data analysis, project management, risk assessment, etc. As a consultant I work with a variety of Clients keeping the day job varied and interesting, attempting to solve complex problems across a wide range of sites/ situations from aviation, pharmaceutical, government, housing, etc.

It is very important to consider what type of career the professional wants as soon as possible. As soon as the professional decides what he/she wants to do, better they can define goals and the way to achieve them. Other important aspect in define early the type of career, is the possibility to choose the correct specialization/ courses and avoid “lose” time with courses that which will not be useful for the chosen career.

In practice, environmental scientists are required to acquire safety issues since environmental roles are often hired as EHS (environment, health, and safety) ones. EHS roles are required to ensure that all employees are following safety protocols and procedures, which includes conducting safety audits, investigating accidents, and developing safety programs.

Environmental scientists enjoy diverse career opportunities in government agencies, consulting firms, research institutions, and non-profit organizations. They contribute to policy development, conduct impactful research, and address pressing environmental challenges. Roles include environmental consultant, researcher, policy analyst, and sustainability manager. With growing global concerns, there's an increasing demand for professionals in areas like climate change mitigation, water resource management, and sustainable development. Environmental scientists also play pivotal roles in industries adopting green practices, ensuring a wide array of rewarding career paths as they strive to create a healthier, more sustainable planet.
