What does a business process specialist do?

Examining the current state, starts by documenting a process with the process stakeholders. They are the expert of their activities. This is not just documenting going from step A, to B, to C, etc. Talk about their annoyances, the things they think can be done differently, etc. Using simple tools like SIPOC for each step will help. e.g. I was talking to a technical writer, and he said people sometimes complain that the requested document was not ready in time. In the SIPOC for some of the activities, there was a long list of teams the technical writer was dependent on. Just by knowing that, it was clear that was a bottle neck of their process.

Once the solution is ready, involve all the process/business associated parties to start the implementation, it has to be step by step by starting with key teams or team members. While implementing the solution, keep monitoring the performance via KPIs and matrices to evaluate the solution. Depending on the performance, implement the solution widely or if require any modifications, re run the same implementation by modification and then implement it completely. Successful implementation always requires support from all the stakeholders holders to keep patience and wait for the defined time frame to find the best results.

Qualifications are a must. However, In my experience, stakeholder management is one of the important skill that people learn on the job to understand core business processes of a company. It’s not that every business consultant would have a complete overview of operational and functional landscape of an organisation.

It requires skills and qualifications along with great understanding with the business methodologies. While it all depends business to business, however, strong communication, analytical mindset, problem solving and solution orientated mindset, collaborative and decision making skills are very much required.

It’s very demanding and critical role which made it very challenging as well. It requires adjustive, understanding and willing to seek feedbacks attitude as there are different stakeholders are involved and it’s not necessary that all of them have same objectives and perspectives.
