Try out as many solutions as possible. But. Then you talk to a person who switched to the VR field from another field or started fresh recently. Be curious, ask questions, get the insights,get to know the person as a personality, their story and motivations. Then talk to a few more people like that. Then reflect and figure out whether it resonates, if the approaches and experiences are relatable to YOUR personality. And only then proceed to the next step. Which potentially means getting a mentor. And then go your own path not steps that somebody suggests and maybe had totally different aims, motivations and a mission. VR is a technology (the one with high added value) driven by people and their missions. Fight your fears on each step.
Conduct research on virtual reality to understand about the technology and it's application and see where it has potential. Understand the use cases and problems behind the technology and domains that utilize it and how it can help solve the problem around. There are so many different disciplines that focus on VR. You can work on that area from the designer, artist, engineer or developer background. Understand where your interest and strengths are and then explore the use case of the technology and current market and see where you and your skills can fill in that gap
To start a career in VR, you need to have some foundational knowledge and skills in the field. You should be familiar with the concepts, principles, and best practices of VR design and development, such as user interface, interaction, immersion, presence, accessibility, and performance. You should also learn how to use the tools and platforms that are commonly used in the VR industry, such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, Maya, Photoshop, Oculus, SteamVR, and WebXR. You can find online courses, tutorials, books, and resources to help you learn the basics of VR.
Leveraging Resources for Learning VR: There are numerous talented creators and instructors offering introductory VR courses, many of which are free. These courses often provide opportunities to directly interact with the creators or teachers. To stay informed about the latest developments in VR: - Subscribe to newsletters from leading VR companies. - Follow relevant blogs. - Join Discord channels that align with your interests. Start Practicing: Dive into building and experimenting. There are plenty of free tools available designed to help beginners in Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality. These introductory courses are tailored for newcomers, making it easier for you to explore the areas that interest you most.
To learn more about VR development and technical skills in general behind as previously mentioned understand where your strengths are. If you are an artist or designer learn 3D modelling skills such as blender, 3d max or maya. If you are more on the engineering and simulation side learn unity or unreal engine. Understand the basic packages. Even if you are one of over the area in terms of skills being cross disciplined really helps because you get an idea of perspective of people from other backgrounds so you can communicate tasks and instructions to each other on the job along with progress
One of the best ways to showcase your skills and potential in VR is to build your own portfolio of projects. You can create VR experiences for different platforms, genres, and audiences, and demonstrate your creativity, problem-solving, and technical abilities. You can also collaborate with other VR enthusiasts, join hackathons and competitions, and contribute to open-source projects. You should document your work process, challenges, solutions, and feedback, and share your portfolio online and on social media.
Building a portfolio in VR is the best part because once you build some really cool apps you can then market it out to jobs. One way is building your own personal website and putting all your latest projects on there or even just recording demos of your project really and then uploading videos to your YouTube channel where you can describe what is going on more in depth behind the scenes along with showing cool demos.
Building a portfolio of work is important, but again, that doesn't necessarily mean creating a VR application all by yourself! Maybe a role in social media is best for you? Create a professional X (formerly Twitter) account and share your content. Are you looking for something in press/PR? Create some articles and post them on Medium or even here on LinkedIn! There's many opportunities to showcase your talents even if you're not a developer of VR content.
Or - if you don't want to be a developer, become a VR, XR user experience specialist, designer, tester, business advisor, marketing specialist etc.etc. VR, XR has very different specifics in each field (architecture, fashion, healthcare etc), you need to apply your strong sides where it excites you the most. It will pay off in the long run.
Another important step to start a career in VR is to network and connect with other people who are involved in the field. You can join online and offline VR communities, groups, forums, and platforms, and participate in discussions, debates, and events. You can also reach out to VR professionals, mentors, influencers, and employers, and ask for advice, feedback, recommendations, and referrals. You should also follow the latest trends, news, and developments in the VR industry, and stay updated on the opportunities and challenges.
Go to VR conferences in your field of interest!!! Prepare before the conference, book meeting, explore the people you want to talk to. In person.
Network with people out there in the VR space whether people from industry or academia to understand both the development process in VR but also learn more about the backbone technologies behind VR and how VR was built. Learn from those experienced people how they got started in their careers and where they recommend you to get started so you have a direction to go with.
Industry Events and Exhibitions: Consider attending leading XR events such as Gamescom, GDC, or AWE. These events offer a valuable opportunity to immerse yourself in the industry, listen to insightful keynotes, and participate in masterclasses. Networking can come in many forms. Attending relevant events is of course an obvious option. However, there's plenty of opportunities to contribute online, too. Join relevant groups and enter into discussions. Be prepared to have your learnings challenged as VR changes very rapidly. Don't be afraid to evolve as the medium does and take onboard feedback from other users.
Finally, when you are ready to apply for a VR job or project, you should prepare your resume, cover letter, portfolio, and online presence. You should highlight your relevant skills, experience, achievements, and passion for VR. You should also research the company or organization you are applying to, and tailor your application to their needs and goals. You should also practice your interview skills, and prepare for common VR questions and tasks. You should also showcase your personality, enthusiasm, and curiosity for VR.
Navigating job rejections in VR: To be fair, the VR industry, while growing, is still relatively small compared to more established sectors. Don't be discouraged by job rejections. Persistence and continuous effort are key. Apply broadly, sometimes even considering positions in different locations. When applying, emphasize your strengths. Clearly articulate how: (1) Your skills align with the company's needs. (2) You can create a significant impact for your potential employer. Lastly, prioritizs applying for roles that genuinely excite you. The best job isn't always the one that pays the most, but rather the one that will bring you long-term satisfaction and happiness.
Have a good cover letter, portfolio and resume ready to sell yourself to recruiters and hiring managers. Applying to a job is all about how well you market yourself. Having the skills, experiences and portfolio is one thing but it is also important in knowing how to back up your statement very well. If you can do that you will all set on any job

Basti said pretty much everything that needed to be said, thank you ;) One last thing to consider is definitely try and find the closest XR group or meetings if you live in somewhat big cities. These meetups are invaluable, not only for networking, but also to have people you can interact with around these subjects we are passionate about! If no meetups exist, I would definitely consider starting them yourself. It’s the best way to attract a ton of local attention from peers!
