You are needed and will be called up to help if you are remotely good at what you do. The trade show industry is unique and the skill sets you are equipped with are very attractive. I have a few 'retiring' colleagues that have been regularly brought back in to help as they can hit the ground running and businesses can trust them at short notice. Covid-19 also saw a big brain drain and this has made the skills of experienced trade show professionals even more in demand.

Retirement or career transition can also be a great time to pursue your hobbies and interests that you may have neglected or postponed due to your busy schedule. You can use your free time to explore new activities, learn new skills, travel to new places, or join new clubs or groups. ....and how can these hobbies and interests potentially align with you still contributing to trade shows in some way. The knowledge you have for a mentoring role or similar is invaluable. Trade shows, whilst obviously a little different with technology than yesteryear, have also many parts which are the same as 100 years ago. It is still a place for relationship building, buyer meets seller and where industries get together for their longest period each year (in the case of the main industry event).

Retiring from any career takes planning and the trade show industry might be especially challenging. Like the slogan goes, “There’s no business like show business.” There are many unique aspects to trade shows that could make retiring difficult. The planning, exhibits, the show floor activities and all within 3 days really can’t be matched in business. Exhibiting at trade shows is exciting, challenging and rewarding. One of the first emotional hurdles to get over when thinking of retiring is not being the person on your business card. There’s a good chance that once you retire, those “friends” you think you made all these years might no longer treat you as they did before you dropped out. Its “nothing personal, just business”
