The best way to gain knowledge is to get experience. Your education paved the way. Now go back a step and learn the hard way. Not only will you have a real hands on understanding, your ability to predict job length and completion will be greatly tested and proven. Instead of being that person that got the paper and showed up, you’re the person that got the paper, got the experience, and can be a trusted leader on the team.

The best thing a person can do is find a trade union in that field. If I didn’t join the local millwright union I’d never be where I was. I learned great skills and made huge connections to do my training program and my foreman over the years. It’s intimidating and the concept of dues seems unfair. But it’s worth it.

If there is one takeway I have learned over the two decades in this business it would be to spend more time in the field. Explore the jobsite, walk the built conditions, and cross reference the original design documents. Often times we learn that what is drawn...is not what is built. Learning why this happens and adapting is all part of the journey.

In my experience, I have learned that every environment is different. When I leave my house that may not be clean at the time and enter someone else’s home that may be immaculate. This will intrigue me and make me kind of analyze this environment I am in and say well if I do xyz, I can experience the same environment. You have to be open to know that nothing is the same. When we learn to adapt then we can see clearer on how to approach learning. But if you have expectations then you will easily be disappointed with what you encounter.
