As the November chill settles in, so do looming challenges?of midterms . For students, this is?often a time of?heightened stress and intense focus; for parents, it’s an opportunity to provide the guidance and support that can make all the difference. The key to navigating this period is balance—students need both effective study strategies and the calm energy that comes from a supportive environment. At SAOTG, we’re here to help parents, educators, and students meet these challenges head on.
This month, we’re focusing on ways to help students gear up for midterms without losing sight of their overall well-being. Midterms can be daunting, but they’re also a chance to reinforce skills that foster long-term success. As we often say this time of year, how?students handle?midterms is indicative of how they approach the rest of the school year. As always, Executive Function (EF) is always a key?predictor of success.
For parents and support professionals looking to help students wrap up the semester, here are our November tips:
Methods Matter?- Encourage your student to approach midterms strategically . This means not just studying harder but studying smarter. Help them break down study sessions into manageable time slots focused on one subject at a time. By using techniques like active recall and spaced repetition, students can boost their retention and build confidence. Supporting students in their efforts to?create?a simple study plan or?even just helping them organize their materials can turn those anxious feelings into meaningful action.
Reinforce Balance - Remind students that rest is part of productivity . Taking short breaks during study sessions isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Encourage them to step away from screens, get outside, and spend a few moments breathing deeply to reset. A healthy balance of study and rest reduces stress, improves focus , and can lead to better performance. For students who struggle to pull themselves away, help them by scheduling breaks at agreed-upon intervals. A visual timer like the Time Timer is wonderful for both staying on task while studying and remembering to take much-needed breaks.
Cultivate a Calm Environment - Midterms can create tension for everyone, so aim to keep the home (and school) environment as calm as possible. Practicing patience , offering words of encouragement,?limiting distractions, and checking in on how they’re feeling can make a big difference in how students approach the next month of school. Remind your student that their worth isn’t defined by test scores.?Growth and effort are the key metrics of success.
Nextdoor Fave and Who’s Who Recognition - We’re thrilled to announce that SAOTG has been once again recognized as a?Nextdoor Fave . Evan Weinberger, our Founder & CEO, was also?honored by being inducted into?the prestigious Marquis?Who’s Who in America . ?These awards and recognitions are symbols of our dedication to serving students and their families with exceptional, EF-driven academic coaching and tutoring. Thank you to our community for making this possible!?
SAOTG at Families Empowered Luncheon - SAOTG recently had the privilege of sponsoring and attending the Families Empowered Luncheon , a gathering dedicated to supporting families in navigating the often challenging educational journey for their children. Our involvement reflects our commitment to empowering parents and students across all academic stages. This event inspired us to continue enhancing our programs and resources to support diverse family needs.
