Take on projects or roles, even if they're outside your comfort zone, to showcase your capabilities and adaptability. Actively seek feedback and be open to constructive criticism, using it as a foundation for growth. Consistency in these efforts will gradually build your credibility and establish you as a respected leader in your new field.

To gain credibility as a leader in a new industry, I'd immerse myself in learning, researching, and networking within the industry. I'd seek mentorship from established industry leaders and actively participate in industry events, conferences, and forums to build relationships and knowledge. Sharing insights, contributing to discussions, and showcasing my expertise through thought leadership platforms like blogs or webinars would also help establish credibility. Consistent dedication to learning and engagement demonstrates my commitment to understanding and excelling in the new industry.

I'd say avoid overcompensating. It's tempting to come into a new role guns blazing, eager to prove your worth. This approach can backfire, especially if you're still getting your bearings in a new industry. Instead of rushing to assert yourself as a leader, take the time to listen and learn from those who have more knowledge & experience. Acknowledge that they understand the nuances & subtleties of the industry better than you do. Listen more than you talk & ask more than you tell. Once you've grasped the lay of the land, leverage your skills and expertise to make a positive impact.

Work hard, strive to learn and improve all the time, take a leadership role if necessary, volunteer for projects and teams, be the very best at the work that you do, have a professional attitude, take advice and criticism, show loyalty to the team and the company, honor customers and fellow employees.

To establish credibility need to take some steps as follows.... Clarify your values, strengths, and unique qualities that differentiate you from others. Enhance your online presence through social media platforms, a personal website, or a blog to showcase your expertise and personality. Regularly create and share valuable content related to your niche or industry to establish yourself as an authority. Engage with others in your field through networking events, conferences, and online communities to expand your reach and build relationships. Maintain consistency in your messaging, visuals, and interactions across all platforms to reinforce your brand identity.

Don’t make promises to your team members you don’t intend to keep. Lead my example, so your team fellows follow. Put yourself in your team members shoes and respect how they feel ! Be empathetic and spread positive vibes.

You can show expertise best by giving good service. Most of my clients come from word of mouth. When the word spreads, people also ask you for advice when they are in the same boat.

I can’t agree more that authenticity and genuine interaction are key. Treat everyone with respect be they the CEO or the janitor. Listen, then lead. When I left the RAF and joined PSINet in 1999, just in time to deal with the millennium bug I thought ever day I was a fraud and everyone around me knew more than me. And then I started to realize that I had something to contribute, that the military instills critical thinking and great project management and I started to contribute, but honestly. Now, my job is to ensure the next generation can thrive; that my experience is useful to those that follow.

After 21 years in the Navy, I can say that when someone struggles for credibility as a leader and tries to force it, it often backfires; authenticity is critical. Forced leadership and attempts to be someone you need to be more transparent to your team erode trust and effectiveness. Authentic leadership flows naturally, built on genuine interactions and mutual respect. Efforts to "act" the part can harm more than help, undermining your authority and team cohesion. Embrace your authentic self for effective leadership, fostering a positive and productive environment. If being a leader is not in your nature - you can learn. Get an Executive Coach, and they can help. It is a learned skill and something you can read and pick up in a book.

From my observations, when a new leader is struggling in their role it is because they failed to "onboard" themselves. This onboarding process involves interviewing peers, bosses, collaborators, and direct reports to understand the challenges they are facing, what needs they have, what kind of support they need to succeed, and to understand who are going to be your allies and who do you need to build relationships with. Never make big decisions in a new leadership role without fully understanding who you are working with and what they are trying to accomplish.

Break it down to the basics. More often than not there is a small period of time when the new leader must prove to the organization they are worth their weight. Active engagement and open listening are crucial for streamlining group acceptance and trust.
