What do you do if you're struggling to find job opportunities in Career Counseling?

Every career counselling session I give to students & young professionals is like going back in a time-machine & helping myself. Yes, having selected a random career path after school and painfully changing my domain later as a young professional, I empathize with those who are in career dilemma. Hence, it gives immense fulfillment & there lies my niche!

The answer is simple: create your own career opportunities and start your own business. If you struggle with getting clients work with a marketing coach first to learn a bit of marketing (you might be a great counselor but not a great marketer at first).

Make networking a habit, as your netWORK is your netWORTH. Research says about 80% of jobs are found via networking. Meet people in person and online. Have one-on-one virtual or in-person coffees. Reach out to have informational interviews. Volunteer. Join a Board. You can network at organizations like NCDA (and local chapters) and MACCA, for example, or network with others in higher education or outplacement agencies if you are looking for a W-2 job. If you want to start your own business, join job seeker clubs on meetup and other places. Speak in person or online and write so people can hear what you have to say, and you can showcase your expertise. LinkedIn is an essential platform for career counseling!

One thing I found helpful is highliting transferable skills on resume. Let say, you are a teacher. A teacher always communicates wirh student and explains well. You can use the same skills in customer service as well. Make sure you just pitch it right. All the best ??

Keeping your skills to yourself is a disservice to the society. It's like you yourself being the hindrance in helping others. I learnt it the hard way, having neglected to showcase skills for long thinking that it's bragging. You don't have to self promote yourself but try to give authentic value to community around you, people in need will come to you!

Preparing for interviews involves thorough research about the company, understanding the job requirements, practicing common interview questions, and preparing relevant examples from your experiences. Additionally, ensure you dress professionally, arrive early, and bring necessary documents. Lastly, prepare insightful questions to ask the interviewer, demonstrating your interest and engagement. With proper preparation and confidence, you'll be ready to impress during your interviews.

Volunteer your services to a worthy organization or individual. Use what you uniquely have to offer to help someone with their career challenges. Make decisions regarding what, who, and why based on your core values. Use your particular methods based on your talent, skills, competencies, experiences, and intuition. Demonstrate how your specialized approach actually works to help someone in the real world. Build, practice, refine, improve and progress naturally towards your individual niche based on your unique offer and capability set. When you have enough evidence to present, explain, and show proof of the value of your work, paid opportunities will arise because you have proven your impact and demonstrated where you belong.
